A variation gets agreed on site on a Tuesday. The customer wants a powerpoint moved and the alfresco opening widened. The supervisor says no worries, snaps a photo, gets on with the pour.
By the Friday claim run the number has drifted. The supervisor barely remembers what was agreed. The customer is sure they were quoted less.
The office prices it off a photo and a one-line text, and to keep things friendly the builder splits the difference. That gap comes straight out of margin. Do it eight times across a build and you've handed back real money for work you genuinely did.
The pricing was never wrong. The agreement just lived in a phone instead of on the contract. A variation you didn't write down is a discount you never agreed to give, and it's the moment a good customer quietly starts keeping score.
Undocumented goodwill is the most expensive thing on a job.
Go back through your last build and count the variations that only existed as a text or a chat on the slab. That number is what being easygoing cost you.
