Global drone technology lands in Peel as WA strengthens innovation capability
Drones took to the skies at Food Innovation Precinct Western Australia - FIPWA on 22 April 2026, as a new drone technology hub was officially launched by Australia Agritech.
The hub was officially opened by Minister Stephen Dawson MLC, alongside the unveiling of the Aerial Futures initiative β a new program designed to build capability, support enterprise and accelerate the adoption of drone technology across Western Australia.
The event showcased how drones are being used in real-world settings, from precision agriculture and crop spraying through to environmental monitoring and infrastructure inspection, offering strong visual opportunities for media.
The development positions the Peel region within a global network of drone innovation, connecting local operators and businesses with international counterparts and emerging best practice. It also builds on FIPWAβs growing international engagement through partnerships in India, Malaysia and Singapore, further strengthening its role as a gateway for technology transfer into Western Australia.
As a State-recognised innovation hub, FIPWA brings together industry, government and global partners to accelerate the adoption of new technologies. The Drone Hub reflects this role, providing a platform for businesses to engage with advanced technology in a practical, commercially relevant way.
The Aerial Futures initiative, delivered in partnership between Australia Agritech, the Peel Development Commission and the Shire of Murray, supports workforce development and new enterprise opportunities in the region. Backed by a combined investment from the project partners, the initiative is expected to contribute to job creation and the growth of new service-based industries.
Peel Development Commission, Chair, Myrianthe Riddy, said the launch highlights Western Australiaβs commitment to innovation-led growth.
βThis initiative brings global technology into a regional setting, creating new opportunities for industry, jobs and economic development,β she said.
Australia Agritech Director Judy Zhu said the hub represents a shift from awareness to application.
βThis is about bringing technology into a real-world setting where industry can see it,use it and build new opportunities around it. It opens the door for businesses across multiple sectors to engage with drone technology in a practical and commercially relevant way,β she said.
