Join the Nickel Laterite Ore Beneficiation Innovation Challenge in collaboration with PT Vale Indonesia (PTVI)!

Through this challenge, we invite global innovators to propose physical, chemical, hybrid or alternative breakthrough methods to improve how nickel laterite ore is beneficiated, sized, and dewatered prior to smelting.

Why?
PT Vale Indonesia (PTVI) operations contribute to one of the largest lateritic nickel hubs in the world, producing high quality nickel matte from laterite ores.

Today, the journey from mine to metal is challenged by issues such the inefficient particle sizing and screening practices, the high moisture content and the excess material rehandling.

These challenges hinder the delivery of properly sized and adequately beneficiated ore to the dryers and smelting units, reducing throughput and increasing the energy required to produce a final saleable product.

Through this challenge, South32 is exploring innovative methods to eliminate and/or safely manage the cryolite bath crust that may form in the molten aluminium transfer ladles during the transfer from Reduction cells to the Casthouse furnaces.

Why?
The facilities’ smelter currently faces challenges related to the formation of electrolyte crusts during the transfer of molten aluminium from ladles to Casthouse furnaces. This process, which involves vehicle-mounted ladles, is susceptible to delays that can lead to electrolyte crust formation, impacting productivity and safety.

What’s in it for you?
Hillside Aluminium and South32 via their innovation program, Innovate32, have funding and an established pathway to support selected innovators from this challenge through studies, tests, engineering, field trials, and commercial agreements, where applicable and agreed.
