So far the world has heard about ransomware. A Ransomware holds a business hostage against their exposed data. This puts the business at risk of losing its brand’s reputation and suffers financial lose.
What if this is an unsuspecting individual whose reputation is held hostage. The impact is similar, only this time a family may get affected. How does it work. Recently our team investigated one such attempt by the cyber perpetrators based out of Kolkata, West Bengal.
A new generation of threat has emerged from Indian subcontinent, where female Facebook profiles sends friend request and/ or a messenger request. They will initiate a friendly chat and manipulate the victim to come to watsapp chat. We provided Datamavic’s business mobile number to initiate a chat and subsequently, they escalated to a video chat. The perpetrators records the image/ video of the victim. Once done they will create a sexually explicit video that combines the face of the victim in one sequence followed by a different video sequence of another sexually exposed man. This video is then used to threat the victim to release funds to a bank account in India or to release bitcoin in their nominated wallet.
