It is alarming at the increasing number of scams targeting people via their computers and mobile phones. People calling you pretending to be from “Telstra technical department” or “Microsoft technical department” these people start out by telling you that can see you have problems with your computer and they will help solve these problems. Be assured they can’t see your computer problems, they are smart enough to realise we all have a few problems on our computers, it is just a way to get your attention and make you think they are here to help.
At this point you should have alarm bells ringing, as a complete stranger is about to ask you to give them control of your computer via a remote login program so they can supposedly repair any problems.
They will ask you to pay via credit card for a service at a price substantially dearer than your local computer repairer would charge for similar services. And while they are in there they can troll around for any personal details and user names and passwords that may be of interest to the.
Simple solution if you realise this is a scam is to disconnect the internet by turning the modem off, this breaks their connection and control over your computer. Then if you have any worries have your local repairer check for any problems they may have created.
Be aware of email scams as well. If it looks too good to be true be assured it is, do not become a victim as many people have lost large amounts of money to these scammers. You can look at the Australian governments scam watch, most of these scams will be eventually listed at this site. Google “accc scamwatch” for a link, makes for interesting reading.
