Safety First: Wear protective eye glasses and rubber gloves—that powdery crust contains dried sulphuric acid residue that will irritate skin and eat holes through clothes.Ensure the engine and ignition are turned off.Step-by-Step Cleaning Process:1.Disconnect the Cables:Always disconnect the negative (-) cable first to avoid electrical short-circuits.Loosen the nut on the Negative (-) terminal clamp with a wrench and twist the clamp off gently. Securing the cable away from the post ensures it won't pop back into place. Repeat the process for the Positive (+) cable.2.Apply a Neutralising Solution:Mix one tablespoon of household baking soda into a cup of warm water. Pour the mixture directly over the corroded terminals and cable ends. You will see a vigorous fizzing reaction as the alkaline baking soda neutralises the acidic build-up.3.Scrub and Rinse:Use a wire battery terminal brush or an old toothbrush to scrub away all softened crust from the posts, clamps, and hardware until the bare metal shines. Rinse thoroughly with a small amount of clean water and dry thoroughly with a rag.4.Protect and Reconnect:Connect the positive (+) cable first, followed by the negative (-).Apply a thin coat of terminal protector spray or petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to the bare metal posts to seal out air and moisture. Reinstall the positive cable first, then the negative, making sure both clamps are tightened securely so they cannot be twisted by hand.
