I’ve been hooked on listening to .b.peterson the last two days, and this quote really sums up my feelings around being agents of change: it always—ALWAYS—starts with me. I cannot avoid the areas of my life I am afraid of and don’t want to face and still think I can change anything about the world, and only God can give me the courage and ability to change myself first. Let’s do those hard things. 💪🏼

Really enjoying right now, particularly this sentiment on the back of the latest “deconversion” story. I phrase it that way because it leaves space for questions. How can we know the end of the story, ours or anyone else’s? We can’t. But ain’t it something not to know and despite it, still believe. 🙏🏼

On writing. ✍🏼 ⁣

I’m always writing. My brain reads like a narrator, and whether I actually put pen to paper or not, the words continue to swirl around and arrange themselves in my head. Sometimes it’s fictional, sometimes it’s what I observe, other times it’s personal experience. At the end of the day, I find it therapeutic to wrap words around everything, even if it’s only a simple thought. ⁣

While I use my blog for long form, I’m curious to see what arises if I give simple conversational, fictional paragraphs a chance. I’ve called them , since they may not be stories congruent with reality’s context, but they may be echoing observations from a soulish context. These are also “texts”, and I liked the wordplay. ⁣

I’m hopeful that your soul may find a shared connection through these simple, wondering (wandering?) words, and that you recognise your soul as being a part of God’s greater context. 💎

I’m no professional photographer, but I do love to point and shoot.⁣

wrote that “research shows creative activities like photography help you relax, lowering your stress levels, leaving you feeling mentally clear and calm. Taking a photo disrupts the usual flow of worrisome thoughts or juggling lists. It gives your brain a mental break to focus on something new and offers the calming benefits of meditation.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This has proven true for me. Both the stopping and taking a photo—even if it’s only an iPhone shot—and editing in the Lightroom app has a therapeutic effect for me. As a lover of beauty, it brings me joy not only to appreciate God’s spectacular (or even in some cases, blessedly ordinary) creation for myself, but also to share it.⁣⁣

May these snapshots give you a window of opportunity to breathe out and remember God’s peace is present with you. 💙

On music. 🎵 ⁣

This song rang in my year, and has continued to be a theme for my life in a crazy 2020. New songs, new seasons of life, new job, and now, new artistic direction here. ⁣

I love music. If you cut me I would bleed lyrics. This is such a love of mine, to enter the writing process by beautifying the words that have touched my soul. Songs are my friends, my tools, my passion. I love to listen to them and write them, and I admire them best by sharing them like this. Hopefully it means you are introduced to good music and amazing people at the same time! ⁣

I always need a new song, and I’m so grateful that God continues to bless my heart through new music all the time. He is still speaking, and I love this unique way He works through others to speak to me. 🎶

✨ Changes. ✨ ⁣

Believe it or not, I still think of this Instagram account (linked to my page). A lot. I’ve been procrastinating for months on a few changes of aesthetic direction, even though my work and my loves haven’t changed. I still do graphic design and lettering. However I also love my music, my blogging, and my simple photography. I wanted some online space to breathe in all of these things.⁣

Right now everything feels weird and clunky. I’m not entirely happy with it; especially given I feel like I have split personality by having two accounts by my name instead of one being a business. Who knows, I might change the name back. Forgive me for the tweaks and edits to come, and I hope that eventually I land in a place that is a better fit for encouraging you with good content, and also free to house my variety of pursuits. ⁣

The best is yet to come! 🙌🏼

Believe it or not, I’m still making art, it just looks a little different these days. I’ve picked up some more paid graphic design work for my church lately, so it takes up more of my lettering time. I’ve had some custom designs on the books, but the majority of my creative energy has been directed towards songwriting and releasing some of my original work into the wild. (link in profile for the curious 👀) Lyrics have always been my first love. Even the majority of my art here has been inspired by lyrics. Nothing sparks my creativity quite like a perfect phrase or string of words. Which, ironically, is what caused me to post this to break the silence. Christa Wells is my unofficial songwriting mentor, and following her creative journey has given me so many tools and instructions for better song crafting. I want to honour her with this quick post (perhaps more to come), where she has articulated so winsomely a lesson I have been learning myself. Thank you, Christa, for being vulnerable with your life so that others may be inspired by the wisdom you have gained. ✨

It really is incredible how God can bring a lyric along for me that not only articulates clearly right where I am, but also directs my focus to where it needs to be. I recently wrote in my journal, “people continue to be a struggle for me; puzzles I don’t know how to solve with problems I can’t fix.” Sleep hasn’t been easy lately because my brain has been in overdrive trying to figure out how to help and love people into freedom. Hearing ’s new song this morning, this line hit my like a brick. May my focus, my trust, my reliance be upon finding myself in God’s presence, beloved of His heart instead of being entangled in my mind full of human reasoning and questioning. He has the answers. He brings the freedom. Not me. 🙏🏼

I haven’t done real lettering in far too long. I miss these simple scribbles, and the cathartic effect it has when I take the time to put real ink to paper. What is something blessedly simple that helps to re-center you?
