What the numbers are telling us right now - and what the headlines keep missing.

AI engineering is now the number one job on the rise in Australia, according to the latest employment data. AI literacy has become the most in-demand skill that Australian employers are looking for, and the share of job postings mentioning AI doubled in a single year - from 2.8% to 5.8%.

That is a significant shift in a short amount of time.
And yet.
Two-thirds of all AI-related job postings in Australia are coming from just 1% of employers.

The demand is real, but it is concentrated. Which means the people best positioned to fill these roles - the ones with the right mix of technical grounding and practical experience - are not being found through the usual channels.

They do not need to be on major job boards right now.
They are already inside communities, networks and industry groups.
Waiting to be matched, not browsed.

Same story with remote and flexible work. This one feels like old news, but the data says otherwise.

More than half of Australian workers want hybrid work.
Only 10% of employers offer it.

That is not a trend that has resolved itself. That is a structural mismatch that has been sitting there for years. And what it creates, quietly, is a large pool of people who are available and capable but not actively applying - because the jobs they can see do not match the way they need to work.

They are not invisible because they are not trying.
They are invisible because the system is only built to find the people who are.

We see this across the 100+ talent communities we work with.
There is no shortage of talent. There is a shortage of visibility.

The hiring headlines talk about vacancies, unemployment rates, and AI disruption. What they do not talk about is the space between an available person and an employer who needs them - and what it actually takes to close that gap when neither side knows the other exists.

That is the problem we are in the business of solving.

There are two kinds of job seekers. You probably only know one of them.

Quick question for every employer who has ever said "we just can't find the right people". Where are you looking?

Because there are two kinds of job seekers.
The ones you can see - refreshing their profiles, applying online, showing up in your searches.
And the ones you can't. Skilled, available, ready to work - but sitting inside community networks and local groups that your usual hiring process was never built to reach.

We work with 100+ talent communities across Australia. The hidden workforce is real. And it is bigger than you'd think.

If you're an employer struggling to find the right people - or a council or industry body thinking about how to connect your region's talent to real opportunity - we'd love to talk.

One of the clearest insights from the EDA National Roadshow last month was this:
Workforce attraction doesn’t succeed when it sits with employers alone.

Across regions, the most effective approaches are being led by intermediaries:
Councils
Regional Development Organisations
Industry bodies

These groups play a critical role in:
- Connecting employers to shared talent pools
- Shaping the regional narrative around opportunity and lifestyle
- Coordinating efforts that would otherwise remain fragmented

When intermediaries lead, workforce attraction shifts from isolated activity to coordinated, place-based workforce ecosystems.

And that’s where real scale happens.

uWorkin powers workforce marketplace infrastructure connecting policy, industry, regions, employers and talent at scale.

At the intersection of workforce, talent and place, we build and scale structured Talent Communities - connecting jobs, skills and people to create coordinated ecosystems that drive real economic and social outcomes.

Most regions don’t have a jobs problem.
They have a connection problem.

Employers are hiring.
People are looking for work.
Training organisations are active.
Support services exist.

But too often, everyone operates separately.

That’s what made this work with Regional Development Australia Ipswich & West Moreton and Springfield Regional Jobs Committee so valuable.

Together, we launched two regional Talent Communities:
- Ipswich West Moreton Jobs
- Springfield Jobs

Not just job boards, but connected platforms designed to bring employers, jobseekers, training providers and local organisations into the same workforce network.

Since July 2025:
• 17,600+ registered members
• 540,000+ platform views
• 2.3M+ social reach

More importantly, these communities are now generating real local workforce insight.
- What jobs are growing.
- Where demand is changing.
- Which industries need support.
- How people are engaging with local opportunities.

That kind of visibility helps regions make better workforce decisions, and helps local opportunities reach more people.

This is what workforce development looks like when regions work together instead of in silos.
