A quick update on Athena Spatial maps and Avenza.
Avenza has recently changed its commercial arrangements and future direction for the Avenza Map Store. As part of that shift, publishers are no longer being supported to upload new maps or update existing maps through the Map Store.
What that means for Athena Spatial is pretty simple: we won’t be adding new maps to the Avenza library or updating the existing Avenza catalogue going forward.
That said, the existing Athena Spatial maps on Avenza will remain available for as long as Avenza continues to make them available. We know plenty of hunters like using Avenza, and we’ll keep supporting those users where we reasonably can.
For people who have already purchased Athena Spatial maps through Avenza, those maps remain tied to Avenza and can continue to be used there. They can’t be transferred across into The Hunting App, because paid Avenza maps are locked to that platform by design.
Looking ahead, we think most Aussie hunters will get better value from the paid version of The Hunting App once it is released. The goal is for users to be able to download their own hunting area directly in the app, rather than having to buy individual map sheets one at a time.
So this isn’t about walking away from Avenza users. It’s a change in direction driven by Avenza’s platform changes, while we help shape and support an app that should be more flexible and cost-effective for hunters in the future.
