When an OK page becomes a feature page.

I call this the surprise and delight. Using the content to refresh the reader, surprise them with a new layout and delight them with elements that are fun but familiar to the other pages.

Final stages to the B**b to Food book before we send it to print next week and making it 10% better everyday.

Working with Luka McCabe the most incredible client, who has trusted my vision and crazy ideas on this job. Never felt so supported as a creative and think it’s our best work yet. So close now!

Illustration highlight for B**b to Food new book with Luka McCabe

For these chapter pages I wanted to:
- Reflect the recipes inside
- Have a sense of movement, pancakes flipping, shoes off running on grass, ingredients flying
- showcase the incredible colour palette of the book so far
- reference the same crockery as the styled shots / lifestyle images

Trying to get some winter sun while getting these finished today. Until next week where I turn into a text formatting robot, ready to hunt down hyphens and finding perfect alignment.

I’m testing out a few new illustration styles tonight for a children’s book quote.

So fun to explore a few new methods with and time what is the quickest and what looks most effective.

What style do you like the best?

After three days in Sydney on a self guided art tour, I began to question why do people make art and why it is important in our lives.

This is what I’ve come to.

The artist is the observer.
They notice things. Simple things.
How light falls.
How wind moves.
How people are, a simple raise of an eyebrow that makes them unique.
How places feel.
How people act.
It connects us with reality.

The artist is a journalist.
A way to reflect on history.
A way to mark time now.
A way to make a statement.
A way to encourage conversation.

The artist is a healer.
A way to express thoughts.
A way to explore pain.
A way to remember another.
A way to rewrite how it should be.

Art invites us to comment, feel, discuss and witness these moments that feel important to someone.

It connects us with reality and in a world challenging our reality with bots and AI advances, I couldn’t think of anything more important.

There is nothing I love more than colour. Playing with colour and food give me the greatest joy. Working with the incredible photographer Sabine on these images for Gwinganna's Health Retreat Cookbook was a real highlight.

Things that work:
x Contrasting colour or impact with block monotones
x Leading the eye across the page
x Textures on textures
x Telling a story across an image

These were the base images for the cookbook, alongside historic images of the venue and new shots of their incredible gardens.

Since I started the business 11 years ago, I created a simple survey I send to each client at the end of the job. It helps me find out areas to improve, gather expectations and know which parts clients need further help with moving forward. Real bonus is they often write something really nice at the end, which if I'm ever having a bad design day (if you know you know) then I go back to read these.

I use Typeform which is free to set up.

Three metres from the front door but completely another world. Having a dedicated space to work has changed everything — there's something about sitting down at your desk, surrounded by the things you love, that just switches your brain into a different gear.

Before this I was working from the living room nook, a beautiful but noisy space. Distractions included dinosaur roars and requests for different pens.

Ahh sweet studio with a noise proof door, I appreciate you.

Verandah House Country Estate sits high on Tamborine Mountain with the kind of views that make you want to stay forever — which is exactly what I did. Judy needed a map so guests could find their way around the property, and I spent hours on site just drawing, taking it all in. The spa, sauna, magnesium pool, barn house, those mountains in the distance. One of those commissions that doesn't feel like work at all.

Drawn by hand, polished in .

First step was a draft in black and white before making some changes to the accuracy and then colouring it in.

A wrap up of the success stories from my clients who invested in self-publishing.

A few include:
Selling over 150,000 copies
Covering your costs in 2 months of release
Generating a $$$$ publisher offer
Gaining stockists
Becoming a leader in a field of noise
Having a brand tool to educate clients.

I’m so proud to see how far design can take these products.

I’ve got two spots left for 2026 for book design. Steph x

Today is our 8 year wedding anniversary.

This year it happened to fall just after the Tamborine Mountain Arts Trail where we opened up our painting and design studio for 3 days.

Over 100 people came past and we were so humbled by all the questions and amazing conversations.

It felt like a celebration of the space.
A shipping container my Dad renovated with us to be our office and creative hub.

It felt like a huge accomplishment that we had kept this part of our life alive, our careers and passions going for this long.

In the mix of kids, life and work these moments of reflection seem rare but wow I felt it today.

Made so possible by my incredible Mum who is always there with help with our angels.

The most special part was that David and I could both explain each other’s work, process and outcome in such detail. A next level of love, more than dinners and flowers could show. (I’ll take them too though thank you 😘)

Long story short, it’s been a pretty special time up in this hinterland over the last few days. Couldn’t do it without you
