As a local computer technician, I've seen many computers that people were ready to throw away. In many cases, they didn't need replacing at all.

🛡️ Is Your Computer Really Protected?

Many people think that once an antivirus is installed, they're completely protected.

Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

Cyber threats have changed dramatically over the years. Today, it's not just viruses you need to worry about. Scammers are constantly finding new ways to trick people through fake emails, text messages, phone calls, fake websites, and malicious software.

🦠 What's the difference?

Virus – Infects files and programs and can damage or delete your data.

Malware – A broad term for malicious software. This includes viruses, ransomware, Trojans and other harmful programs.

Spyware – Secretly monitors your computer and may steal passwords, banking details and other personal information.

🛡️ Do you need antivirus software?

Yes! Every Windows computer should have some form of antivirus protection.

The good news is that Windows Security (Microsoft Defender) has improved significantly over the years and now offers very good protection for many home users.

There are also excellent third-party antivirus programs available, both free and paid. Independent testing regularly shows products such as Bitdefender, ESET, Norton, Avast and AVG performing well.

The important thing is to keep your antivirus updated.

⚠️ Remember...

Even the best antivirus cannot protect you from every scam.

The biggest security risk is often being tricked into clicking something you shouldn't.

Be extra careful if you receive:

📧 Emails asking you to log in or verify your account.

📱 Text messages claiming there's a problem with a parcel delivery.

📞 Phone calls claiming to be from Microsoft, Telstra, your bank or another well-known company.

🌐 Websites that don't look quite right or ask for personal information.

💾 Free software downloaded from unknown websites.

✅ Simple ways to stay safer online

✔ Keep Windows updated.

✔ Keep your antivirus up to date.

✔ Think before clicking links or opening attachments.

✔ Download software only from trusted websites.

✔ Back up your important files regularly.

💡 My advice

After more than 25 years repairing computers, I've seen many infections that could have been prevented with a little extra caution.

Technology helps protect you, but common sense is still your best antivirus.

💻 Is Your Hard Drive About to Fail? 3 Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

Most hard drives don't fail without warning. Here are three common signs to watch for:

⚠️ 1. Your computer has suddenly become much slower
If your PC takes much longer to boot, programs freeze, or files are slow to open, it could be more than just an old computer.

⚠️ 2. Strange clicking or grinding noises
A healthy hard drive should be quiet. Repeated clicking or grinding sounds can indicate a mechanical problem that needs attention.

⚠️ 3. Files disappear or become corrupted
If documents won't open, folders disappear, or you start seeing frequent error messages, your hard drive could be developing bad sectors.

👉 My advice: If you notice any of these symptoms, back up your important files immediately. Waiting too long can turn a simple repair into expensive data recovery.

Tamworth locals — quick question.
Has anyone got a laptop or PC that’s running really slow or taking forever to start lately?
I’ve been fixing a few locally and most of the time it’s not as bad as people think — often just a hard drive issue, Windows problem, or something simple.
Some people think their computer is dead, but it can usually be fixed instead of replaced.
