If you've received a notification and email today from Facebook regarding a class action-style payment program, it is legitimate. This program is part of a $50 million enforceable undertaking agreed to by Meta Platforms, Inc. to settle civil penalty proceedings with the Australian Information Commissioner.

As always, verify that any email or message you’ve received came from an official Facebook or Meta source, and cross-check via trusted channels.

Roughly 300,000 Australians may be eligible for the scheme, which applies to those whose personal information was exposed to the “This Is Your Digital Life” app between 2013 and 2015. The program is part of the resolution of concerns raised by the Cambridge Analytica matter and will be independently administered.

You have until 31 December 2025 to apply, so there’s time to review the eligibility requirements. Links to the official OAIC statement and payment scheme information are in the comments.

With this recent legal precedent in WA, it's more important than ever to confirm new or unusual invoice details by phone or direct contact with the creditor. Phishing emails are getting far more sophisticated with the integration of AI in our day to day lives.

In a likely precedent-setting court case involving two companies, a business that received a fraudulent invoice email is ordered to pay costs to an electrical contractor who was hacked.
