"Did the membrane fail?"

Wrong question.

Cracked tiles. Water under the floor. Everyone pointing at the waterproofer.
But the membrane is rarely where the failure starts.

Wrong falls. Poor substrate. A design that couldn't be built as drawn.

By the time it looks like this, three things already went wrong — before a tool touched the ground.

Design drives compliance. Installation implements it. Complibuild helps you apply it.

Basements Part 2 is on tomorrow night and Dincel Structural Walling are backing it.

Dincel's permanent formwork system is one of the most innovative approaches to basement construction available in Australia right now — combining structural walling with built-in waterproofing performance.

Thanks to Berkay Dincel and the team at for supporting Build to Win.

Tomorrow night. Wednesday 8 April. 7pm AEST.

This building has safety fencing around it.

It didn't start with a waterproofing failure.

It started with no site risk analysis before works began.

A seasonal water table eroded the foundations. By the time it showed up, the damage was done.

Remediation post-construction is costly. At best it's a band aid.

Know what you're building in before a tool touches the ground.

Most people in construction don't know these numbers.

$4 billion per year in water related defects. $1.5 million average remediation cost per building. 1 in 5 commercial buildings affected.

The pattern is consistent whether it's internal, external or below grade.

Buildings should be three things. Buildable. Functional. Compliant.

2 out of 3 is bad.

Design drives compliance. Installation implements it. Complibuild helps you apply it.

Tonight we go underground.

Build to Win - Basements Part 1.

Byron Landeryou is joined by Pedram Mojaard from Penetron - covering the construction approach, hydrostatic pressure, and why most basement failures start before a tool touches the ground.

Tonight. Wednesday 1 April. 7pm AEST. Live online.

Basements are the most demanding waterproofing environment in construction.

Hydrostatic pressure from every direction. Construction joints. No room for error.

Australia have spent 18 years solving exactly this - with crystalline waterproofing technology that works inside the concrete itself, not just on the surface.

This is why they're backing Build to Win.

Thanks to the team at Penetron for supporting the series.

One common cause of basement leaking is a lack of testing before a tool has touched the ground.

Most people debate liquid vs sheet membrane.

Wrong question.

Understanding the water table beneath your structure matters more than any product decision.

Most people I speak to don't know this changed.

Since December 2024, defect claims follow the director or nominated supervisor personally. Not the company. You.

The courts aren't asking for perfection. They're asking: can you prove reasonable care was taken?

No trail. No proof. No defence.

Design drives compliance. Installation implements it.

Most people think balconies fail from bad membrane.

Oh, how they are wrong.

Last night in Build to Win we broke down exactly why lightweight balconies fail, and it starts long before the waterproofer arrives.

The failures we talk about in Build to Win?

Demtech have spent 17 years engineering solutions to prevent exactly that.

Screed-free balcony systems. Pre-formed shower bases. Waterproofing membranes built for the way we actually build in Australia.

This is what backing Build to Win looks like — industry partners who are solving real problems, not just selling products.

Thanks to the team at Demtech for supporting the series.

Partnered with The WaterStop Shop to deliver a training session with a group of residential builders and trades focused on the on site realities of non compliance and the remediation of timber frames and reinforced concrete balconies.

The four hour session forms part of a three part series delivered by Byron Landeryou. Bathrooms have already been covered, balconies were the focus of this session, and basements are next.

What makes these sessions effective is the focus on the practical side of the job. Helping practitioners understand what they may not know, breaking down the complexity of the codes and standards, and showing how they apply on site.

It is the same approach used in the Build to Win online masterclass and when Byron works directly with companies delivering this training.
