Something shifted with AI in the last six months. But here's the surprise: almost none of the technology underneath it is new.

The idea of a brain-like machine goes back to 1943. "Artificial intelligence" was coined in 1956. The method that trains nearly every AI system today was well understood by 1986. It just sat there for decades, waiting on cheap computing power and enough data.

The thing that finally cracked it open? Video games. The graphics cards built for gaming turned out to be perfect for the maths AI needs.

What's genuinely new isn't the cleverness. It's that AI is finally reliable enough, and easy enough to wire into your real work, that a normal business owner can actually trust it. That wait is over.

The tech didn't suddenly get clever.

I recently built and launched a replacement for Doofinder on Classic Bike Spares. The goal was simple: improve product search while reducing ongoing SaaS costs.

The result is now live on classicbikespares.com.au, ( https://lnkd.in/eyt3eFqu )with search suggestions, relevance-based results, filtering, sorting, and a much cleaner experience for customers looking through motorcycle parts.

The business is saving around $300 AUD per month compared with the previous setup. My running cost for the replacement I built on Cloudflare is currently under $10/month.

That is the kind of technical win I love:
βœ… Better control over the search experience
βœ… Lower operating costs
βœ… Fast performance
βœ… No dependency on an expensive third-party search subscription
βœ… Built specifically around the needs of the store

It is a good reminder that not every SaaS tool needs to be replaced, but some absolutely can be when the business case makes sense.

This was a fun one to build, especially because ecommerce search has such a direct impact on customer experience and conversions.

Cloudflare Thank you for allowing me to build awesome stuff!

We were paying $564 a month for Monday.com. Built a replacement called Tuesday. Table view, kanban, calendar, dashboards. Imported all our Monday.com data straight across. No per-seat pricing so clients can see their boards without us paying for every login. Runs on Cloudflare Workers, costs almost nothing. tuesday.flared.au

I've been testing chatbots and checking whether web agencies actually use them on their own sites.

Checked about fifty agencies across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, and Lake Macquarie. Three had a chatbot. Three out of fifty. These are companies that build websites for a living.

And the big companies that do have chatbots? One asked "Is there anything else I can help you with?" four times after I said no. Another thought my question about dog insurance was about hitting a dog with my car.

We've been building L2Chat (www.l2chat.au) β€” chat agents that actually know the business, wear the client's brand, and remember the conversation. Still early but the opportunity is massive.

Panda agrees.

Built a couple of ChatGPT Apps this week

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRdctWEOcSs

OpenAI recently opened up a developer preview for building apps inside ChatGPT. I've been testing it out with two different use cases.

Jezweb (our agency): Shows our website portfolio. Someone asks ChatGPT about web development, they can browse actual projects we've built and enquire with a contact form.

Verge Safety Barriers: Shows their product catalogue. Someone asks about warehouse safety equipment, they see actual products with photos, prices, and an enquiry form.

Both pull real data (WordPress for portfolio, WooCommerce for products) and display it in an interactive widget inside the chat.

Where it's at:

Still developer preview - no public app store yet. OpenAI says submissions open "later this year". Launch partners include Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, so they're putting weight behind it.

If you run a business where people ask ChatGPT for recommendations - products, services, whatever - this is worth understanding. Happy to chat about how it works.
