Here’s a counter-intuitive AI tip for you!

Being “a bit” mean to ChatGPT can sometimes get you better answers.

Tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are generative AI. They don’t search like Google, they generate responses based on patterns. Sometimes they’re useful. Sometimes they hallucinate and sound confident while being wrong.

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University found that shorter, more direct prompts performed better than overly polite or vague ones when tested on an older version of ChatGPT.

The takeaway is not to be rude. It’s to be clear.

Instead of asking: “Can you maybe help me understand this, if that’s okay?”

Try: “Explain this in simple terms. Give me the key risks, a practical example and the next step.”

AI can support productivity and decision making, but only when it is used with clear instructions, human judgement and the right oversight.
