The Highball Express – a Cuban-themed tropical-style bar, worthy of Hemingway, in the Melbourne Building in Civic. The highlight is 12 custom-built oak barrels housing rum cocktails.

The fit-out also pays tribute to the original Cuban flights, with silver ceiling fans that echo aeroplane propellers and a sleek 12m bar top. The bar will open from 2pm or 3pm, and will continue well into the night, with room for a dancefloor.

An evolution of the venue’s vision for the space—to emulate the pumping nightlife of post-conflict Lebanon—Bar Beirut’s reinvention called for a complete reimagining of the Garema Place location.

This is because Bar Beirut is no longer just a bar, but a Middle Eastern-Mediterranean meze restaurant too—bringing the taste of Beirut to Canberra, as well as the party.

Guests can now lounge on European-style circular tables (created from reclaimed timber from Boorowa) towards the front of the space or cozy up near the bar under hand-woven and dyed pendant lights created by craftswomen from the foothills of Morrocco’s Atlas Mountains.

Of course, the bar itself—resplendent in pink—pulls focus thanks to Soumi and his team’s dedication to their craft.

As the name suggests, this rather magical cocktail bar takes inspiration from Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Here, your cocktail comes in a teapot, bearing a delightful name and containing an even more delightful concoction. How about a Walrus? That's Talisker, Johnnie Walker Black Label, fresh lemon juice, egg white, and house-made syrup, served with crystallized ginger and nutmeg. Of course, every possible classic cocktail is also available for order, too, if you're not feeling that adventurous.

Blackbird is hidden away, speakeasy-style. When you first walk down the steps into Blackbird, darkness swallows you up. By the time your eyes adjust, you are immersed in this subterranean den where flickering candles illuminate the tables and soft lights hang low, where the bar area sparkles like Aladdin’s cave. Bench seating snakes around the wall; there are plenty of vantage points for the stage in the back corner. I am getting a low-key New Orleans vibe here. Blackbird is unpretentious, a relaxed place to be tucked away in a nook with friends.

Blackbird’s logo is a soaring bird and the bar itself is named after the iconic 1968 song by The Beatles.

High Jinks has been nominated for six awards in the 20th Australian Bartender magazine awards, and is in the running for new bar of the year, regional bar of the year, ACT bar of the year, and ACT cocktail bar of the year.

The tiny bar is tucked away in New Acton, the perfect place to escape the outside world. Once you find your way down the hidden elevator you are greeted with candlelit tables, an impressive array of local liqueurs and rockabilly music.
