I flew into Thailand with a wishlist. A neat little document, colour-coded, titled something painfully optimistic like "Get S**t Done."

Reader, I ticked off precisely none of it.

David had rented a house in Koh Samui for a month so his kids could come up from Perth, and somewhere in my head I'd decided this was going to be the trip where I finally got ahead. Instead, my body staged an intervention: a shoulder so seized up I couldn't lift my arm above my head.

What followed was a bit of a masterclass in listening to myself. A practitioner called Master Lee freed the arm up, then told me that in Chinese medicine a flare-up on the right side points to too much heat, often triggered by chronic stress and repressed emotions. Add a recent HSD (hypermobility spectrum disorder) diagnosis into the mix, and I came home understanding something I keep having to relearn:

Rest isn't what you earn once the work is done. Rest is part of the work.

If you run your own business and you're brilliant at overriding your own needs, this one's for you.

I've written the whole story up on the blog 👇

I flew to Thailand to get ahead in my business and got nothing done. Here's what entrepreneur burnout, a wrecked shoulder and an HSD diagnosis taught me about rest.

Let's talk about the difference between brand strategy and visual identity, because they get mixed up all the time.

Visual identity is the icing. The logo, colours, fonts and all the pretty visuals people see first.

Brand strategy is the sponge. Your mission, values, audience, messaging and positioning. It's what makes your brand meaningful and magnetic, and it's the substance holding everything else up.

Here's the thing: nobody orders a plate of icing. A brand that's all visuals with no strategy underneath looks lovely for about one bite, and it won't attract the right clients either.

We’ve all done it. You spot someone in your industry absolutely smashing it online, so you start posting what they post, in the style they post it, quietly hoping a bit of their magic rubs off on you.

Here’s the thing though. Copying what everyone else is doing is the fastest way to disappear into the noise.

Personal branding was never about blending in with whatever’s trending this week. It’s about leaning into the thing that makes you, you. Your point of view. Your quirks. The way you explain something that nobody else explains quite the same way.

Because that’s what does the heavy lifting. When you speak from your actual point of difference, the right people start to feel like you’re talking directly to them. Not to everyone. To them.

And that’s the bit most people miss entirely. It was never about how many followers you’ve racked up. It’s about the impact you make on the ones who were always meant to find you.

So before you copy the next big account, ask yourself one question: does this sound like me, or does it just sound like them?

In case you missed it, I built something a few years back that plenty of people thought wouldn’t work.

I’m Kate. Proud westie since 2009, brand strategist by trade. And the founder of Women of the West.

Here’s the honest version. I saw a gap in our community. Women craving real connection with nowhere obvious to go, local businesses doing it tough, a whole part of Melbourne’s west that deserved a room of its own. I knew it needed to exist. So I backed myself and built it.

Not with funding. Not with an organisation behind me. Not with a committee signing off on every decision. Just me, a handful of women who believed in the idea, and a lot of nights doing the unglamorous grassroots work nobody sees.

It was completely self-funded. It was completely from scratch. And for a long stretch it was just stubborn faith that I was onto something real.

Here’s how I know it worked.

These days I stand at our events and hear women repeat the messaging back to me. The words I’ve been saying for two years, the ones I had to fight to be heard at the start, are now the words this community uses to describe itself.

That’s the moment it stops being my idea and becomes ours.

If you build something you believe in and back yourself when no one else will, eventually the right people find you. I’m living proof.

To every woman who’s been part of WOW, thank you for making the thing I imagined real.

Thanks to for capturing some of these photos

Being copied is information.

If you’ve built something worth building, it will happen. With your words, your offers, your aesthetic, sometimes the whole concept.

The instinct is to fight it. Out them. Take it personally.

The better move is usually to keep going.

Originals stay ahead because they don’t stop.

Copies struggle because they’re working off a snapshot of who you used to be. By the time their version is out, you’ve moved on.

The fact that someone is studying you is the signal.

It means you’re worth studying.

Use it as fuel.

The most underrated thing about doing the brand strategy work first?

You stop having a low-grade panic attack every time you have to make a decision.

The midnight ‘is this colour palette too pink’ spiral. The ‘is this caption too cheeky’ second-guess. The ‘should I just copy what she’s doing because hers seems to work’ moment. All of it gets quieter.

Not because you stop caring. Because you stop guessing.

When you know your ideal client deeply, decisions get faster, calmer, more aligned. And weirdly, the business itself gets a lot less dramatic to run.

Full post on why brand strategy starts with knowing your ideal client is in my bio.

February was a lot. It was grief and celebration and community and construction dust, sometimes all in the same week. I started the year with a launch plan that made perfect sense on a spreadsheet, and then life did what life does.

I wrote about all of it on the blog. The renovation that ate our lives, losing Kitty G, and why I’m giving myself permission to let things land when they’re ready instead of when the plan says they should. https://katehallcreative.com/when-life-doesnt-follow-your-launch-plan/

Now I’m writing this from Thailand, which is exactly where I need to be right now.

1. My beautiful Kitty G passed away in February. She was 16, she was magnificent, and she ran our household with an iron paw. I miss her every single day.

2. The flowers, the messages, the friends who just showed up. I was overwhelmed by how many people understood that losing a pet is real grief. Thank you doesn’t even come close.

3. Somewhere in the middle of all of it, David and I celebrated 10 years together at Attica. A decade. Still making me laugh over fancy fish crackers.

4. Valentine’s Day with two lovely humans.

5. Those same beautiful friends had a local poet write a poem from Kitty to me. I read it and absolutely lost it. I still can’t get through it without crying.

6. The WOW crew casual catchup. There’s something amazing about being surrounded by women who just get it.

7. Watercooler Wednesday. A new WOW initiative organised by one of our members. Laptops, coffees, and the kind of low-key connection that makes such a difference when you work for yourself.

8. New dining table, new light shades thanks to and if you look through the sliding doors you’ll see the renovation chaos is still very much alive.

9. Jan our amazing landscaper (best tradie I have dealt with) doing his thing out the back. We’re getting there. Slowly. Despite the setbacks.

10. And a cracking WOW networking event to close out the month with new banners and a room full of incredible women.

11. And then I got on a plane. Thailand, you arrived at exactly the right time.
