We Are Mourning
With profound sorrow, we mourn the passing of Artist Mustafa Monowar (1935–2026) one of Bangladesh's most distinguished artists, educators, and cultural visionaries.
A celebrated painter, puppeteer, illustrator, and teacher, Mustafa Monowar devoted more than seven decades to enriching the nation's artistic and cultural landscape. His creative leadership, educational contributions, and unwavering commitment to the arts have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
Born on 1 September 1935 in Magura, he was the son of renowned poet Golam Mostafa. Even in his youth, he demonstrated extraordinary courage by supporting the Language Movement through political cartoons, an act that led to his imprisonment while still a ninth-grade student.
During the Liberation War of 1971, his powerful puppet performances, including "Agacha" , "Rakhashas" and "A Brave Farmer" - brought hope and inspiration to refugees in India.
His unforgettable puppet characters- Parul, Bagha, and Mini; became beloved companions of countless Bangladeshi children.
He also played a pioneering role in launching BTV's iconic children's programme Nutan Kuri and contributed to timeless productions including Raktakarabi and Mukhra Ramani Bashikaran.
In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to art and culture, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2004.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, students, and admirers. Bangladesh has lost a remarkable artist, mentor, and cultural pioneer whose legacy will forever remain woven into the nation's artistic heritage.
