Microsoft’s market value is on the verge of overtaking Apple
In early 2024, Microsoft surpassed Apple to become the world's most valuable company, a title Apple has held intermittently in recent years. This shift in market leadership is attributed to various factors affecting both companies.
Microsoft's stock value rose by 1% to a market capitalization of $2.869 trillion, while Apple's shares decreased by about 1%, resulting in a market cap of $2.866 trillion. This narrow margin marked the first time since 2021 that Microsoft's valuation exceeded Apple's. The rise in Microsoft's value is partly due to its advancements in generative artificial intelligence, including a partnership with OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT. These developments have generated significant investor interest, contributing to Microsoft's robust performance in the market.
On the other hand, Apple experienced a relatively lackluster start to 2024, with its shares falling 3.3% in January, which contrasts with Microsoft's 1.8% rise in the same period. Apple's performance has been affected by various factors, including challenges in the Chinese market and growing competition from Chinese tech giant Huawei. Despite these setbacks, Apple's market capitalization reached a high of $3.081 trillion in December 2023.
Wall Street analysts have shown a more favorable outlook towards Microsoft, with nearly 90% recommending buying the stock and no "sell" ratings. In contrast, Apple has received two "sell" ratings, with only two-thirds of analysts recommending buying its stock.
Despite these developments, both Microsoft and Apple continue to be dominant players in the technology sector and the S&P 500, with their combined weight accounting for about 14% of the overall index. Their rivalry and respective market valuations remain closely watched indicators of their ongoing competition and the health of the broader tech industry
