Common Networking Protocols & Their Default Ports (CCNA Essentials)

🔹 Description:

Three-Tier Network Architecture
A Three-Tier Architecture divides the network into three layers to provide high availability, scalability, security, and easy management.
Layers:
Core Layer
Distribution Layer
Access Layer
1️⃣ ISP / Internet Layer
Two ISPs (ISP-1 and ISP-2) with 1 Gbps links
Connected to Router-1 and Router-2
Provides internet redundancy
If one ISP fails, traffic automatically switches to the other
Interview Point: Dual ISP ensures high availability.
2️⃣ WAN Switch Layer
WAN Switch-1 and WAN Switch-2
Both switches are stacked
Connect routers to firewalls
Use 10G links for high-speed traffic
Benefit: Stacking removes single point of failure and simplifies management.
3️⃣ Firewall Layer
Primary Firewall and Secondary Firewall
Configured in HA (High Availability) mode
Cross-connected using 25G links
Handles:
Security policies
NAT
Internet access control
Threat protection
Interview Point: HA firewalls provide uninterrupted security services.
4️⃣ Core Layer (Layer-3 Switches)
Primary Core L3 Switch and Secondary Core L3 Switch
Both switches are stacked
Responsible for:
Inter-VLAN routing
Routing protocols (OSPF / Static / EIGRP)
Connected to distribution layer using 10G / 20G links
Note: Core layer focuses on fast packet forwarding, not policy enforcement.
5️⃣ Distribution Layer
Distribution Switches (SW-1, SW-2, SW-3, SW-4)
Switches are stacked
Connected to core using LACP (20G links)
Performs:
VLAN segmentation
ACLs
QoS
Policy enforcement
Interview Point: Distribution layer is the control and policy layer.
6️⃣ Access Layer (Layer-2 Switches)
Access Switches (L2)
End devices connect here:
PCs
Laptops
Printers
IP phones
Connected to distribution using LACP
Provides user-level network access
