It’s unusual to remove square footage from a home during a renovation, but that’s exactly what designer Clara Jung of Banner Day Interiors did for her clients—a young family that recently had their first child—to give the space the flow and comfort they craved.
Located in Oakland, California, the three bedroom, three bathroom house once had an addition near the kitchen that interrupted not only the backyard space but the interior as well. “It seemed unnecessary and out of sync with the rest of the home, so we recaptured it and returned it to the yard,” Jung says. “Even with the reduced square footage, we were able to pack in so much closed storage for this very busy, modern family.”
Reverting to the home’s original footprint and removing several structural walls created seamless indoor and outdoor living—with a dining room that opens up to the front patio and a clear line of sight between the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
