Bell Labs pioneers Alfred Aho & Jeffrey Ullman began working together on algorithms & programming languages in the 1960s.
Little did they know that they’d also be sharing a from ACM, Association for Computing Machinery 50+ years later for their contributions to !
As the 1960s drew to a close, Ullman went on to pursue a career in academia. Aho stayed a close member of the Bell Labs family to this day, delivering talks, judging entries, & leading sessions… even after retirement!
But this didn’t stop them from co-authoring the seminal works they’re being recognized for today. Their texts, ‘The Design & Analysis of Computer Algorithms’ (1974, Co-authored by John Hopcroft) & ‘Principles of Compiler Design’ (1977) have been studied by budding computer scientists for decades.
It’s incredibly fitting then, that the two, after working so closely together are sharing this honor. This is Bell Labs’ fifth ACM Turing Award. The award is known as the Nobel Prize of computing.
The pair join distinguished Bell Labs names such as Yann LeCun, Robert Targan, Dennis Ritchie, Ken Thompson & Richard Hamming in this feat.
