বিশ্বের বহুল ব্যবহৃত সার্চ ইঞ্জিন #গুগল। বিশ্বের প্রত্যেক প্রান্ত থেকেই কোটি কোটি মানুষ গুগলের সেবা নিয়ে থাকেন। গুগল নামটিও তাই থাকে মুখে মুখে। তবে সার্চ ইঞ্জিনটির নাম গুগল কেন হলো, এই প্রশ্ন আসাও কিন্তু একেবারে অবান্তর নয়। গুগলের নামকরণের পেছনেও রয়েছে মজার পটভূমি। একটি ভুল থেকেই নাকি গুগল নামের সূচনা হয়েছিল।

ল্যারি পেজের ‘ #ব্যাকরাব’
গুগলের জন্ম স্ট্যানফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গেটস কম্পিউটার সায়েন্স বিল্ডিংয়ে। সেখানে ৩৬০ নম্বর কক্ষটি ছিল গুগলের সহ-প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ল্যারি পেজের। ল্যারি পেজ ও সের্গেই ব্রিনের নতুন আবিষ্কৃত সার্চ ইঞ্জিনের প্রথম নাম ছিল‌ “ব্যাকরাব‌”। ১৯৯৬ সালে এই নামকরণ করা হয়েছিল। বিভিন্ন ওয়েবসাইটের ব্যাক লিংক এখানে থাকত বলেই এমন নাম দেওয়া হয়। তবে নামটি খুব বেশিদিন টেকেনি। শুরু হয়েছিল নতুন নাম ভাবনা। ল্যারি পেজের ওই ৩৬০ নম্বর কক্ষে অন্য ছাত্রদেরও আড্ডা বসত। তাদের মধ্যে একজন ছিলেন সিন আন্ডারসন। যার একটি ভুলের কারণেই শেষ পর্যন্ত গুগল নামের উৎপত্তি। ব্যাকরাব নামটি যুক্তিসঙ্গত হলেও ঠিক যথাযথ মনে হচ্ছিল না। তাই এই নামটি বাদ দেওয়ার কথা ভাবেন শীর্ষকর্তারা। ল্যারি পেজ সেই সময় নিজের সার্চ ইঞ্জিনের নাম পছন্দ করতে আলোচনা শুরু করেন। স্ট্যানফোর্ড ইউনিভার্সিটির ছাত্র ডেভিড কোলার এই মজার পর্বটির কথা লিখে গেছেন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অফিসিয়াল সাইটে। তিনি বলেছেন, “নাম বাছাইয়ের ওই পর্বে সবচেয়ে মজার সভাটি হয় সেপ্টেম্বরে। স্ট্যানফোর্ড ইউনিভার্সিটির ছাত্র সিন‌ অ্যান্ডারসন ও ল্যারি ছিলেন সেখানে। সিনের ভুলেই ঠিক হয় নাম।”

যেভাবে গুগল নামটি এলোঃ-
নামকরণের এই আলোচনার সময় শীর্ষকর্তারা চিন্তা করেন- নাম এমন হবে যাতে বোঝা যায় এর মধ্যে একসঙ্গে বহু ডেটা স্টোর ও সাজিয়ে রাখা হচ্ছে। তখনই গোগলপ্লেক্স (googolplex) নামটি বলেন সিন। তার বিপরীতে ল্যারি বলেন গুগল (googol)। গুগল নামটিই মনে ধরেছিল সবার। তবে এটি চূড়ান্ত করতে হলে একটি বিষয় লক্ষ্য করতে হবে- এই নামে আগে থেকে কোনো সাইট আছে কি-না। সেজন্য সিন নামটি খুঁজতে শুরু করেন; কেউ এটি ব্যবহার করছে কি-না। আগে এই নামে কোনো সাইট থাকলে নামটি নেওয়াও যাবে না।

অবশেষে সাইটে খুঁজতে গিয়েই ভুলটা করেন সিন। গুগল বানানটি ভুল করেন তিনি। সিন googol-এর বদলে google লিখে ফেলেন। দেখা যায়, এর আগে এই নামে কোনো সাইটও হয়নি। ফলে গুগল (google) নামটি তখন থেকেই চূড়ান্ত হয়ে যায়।
