Apple Officially Unveils the iPhone X

Apple has officially unveiled the new iPhone X featuring an all-glass design with a 5.8-inch Super Retina display, A11 Bionic chip, wireless charging and an improved rear camera with dual optical image stabilization.

iPhone X also features a new way for customers to unlock, authenticate and pay using Face ID, enabled by the new TrueDepth camera.

“For more than a decade, our intention has been to create an iPhone that is all display. The iPhone X is the realization of that vision,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “With the introduction of iPhone ten years ago, we revolutionized the mobile phone with Multi-Touch. iPhone X marks a new era for iPhone — one in which the device disappears into the experience.”

Gorgeous All-Screen Design
iPhone X introduces a revolutionary design with a stunning all-screen display that precisely follows the curve of the device, clear to the elegantly rounded corners. The all-glass front and back feature the most durable glass ever in a smartphone in silver or space gray, while a highly polished, surgical-grade stainless steel band seamlessly wraps around and reinforces iPhone X. A seven-layer color process allows for precise color hues and opacity on the glass finish, and a reflective optical layer enhances the rich colors, making the design as elegant as it is durable, while maintaining water and dust resistance.

Remarkable Super Retina Display
The beautiful 5.8-inch Super Retina display2 is the first OLED panel that rises to the standards of iPhone, with stunning colors, true blacks, a million-to-one contrast ratio and wide color support with the best system-wide color management in a smartphone. Face ID, a Powerful and Secure Authentication System
Face ID revolutionizes authentication on iPhone X, using a state-of-the-art TrueDepth camera system made up of a dot projector, infrared camera and flood illuminator, and is powered by A11 Bionic to accurately map and recognize a face. These advanced depth-sensing technologies work together to securely unlock iPhone, enable Apple Pay, gain access to secure apps and many more new features.

Face ID projects more than 30,000 invisible IR dots. The IR image and dot pattern are pushed through neural networks to create a mathematical model of your face and send the data to the secure enclave to confirm a match, while adapting to physical changes in appearance over time. All saved facial information is protected by the secure enclave to keep data extremely secure, while all of the processing is done on-device and not in the cloud to protect user privacy. Face ID only unlocks iPhone X when customers look at it and is designed to prevent spoofing by photos or masks.

Reinvented Front and Back Cameras Featuring Portrait Lighting
The new 7-megapixel TrueDepth camera that enables Face ID features wide color capture, auto image stabilization and precise exposure control, and brings Portrait mode to the front camera for stunning selfies with a depth-of-field effect.

iPhone X also features a redesigned dual 12-megapixel rear camera system with dual optical image stabilization. The ƒ/1.8 aperture on the wide-angle camera joins an improved ƒ/2.4 aperture on the telephoto camera for better photos and videos. New iPhone 8 Schematics Leak Shows In-Screen Touch-ID And Bezel-Less Display

If you often look to the Weibo social network for China-based leaks of new devices and software, then you will likely be familiar with the frequent leaks of user KK Sneak Leaks. After having a notable amount of success in the past, the user has now shared a schematic and render of what is purported to be Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8, showing a device with minimal bezels, a virtual Home button with integrated Touch ID built into the screen, and a presumably OLED display which dominates the front of the device.

We’ve already been privy to renders and schematic drawings hinting at what the iPhone 8 could look like, and what features we should be expecting. Some of those leaks corroborate one another with shared predictions, whereas others suggest the complete opposite, meaning that there is definitely erroneous information flying around.

This latest leak shows a schematic drawing depicting a next-generation iPhone dubbed the ‘iPhone X’ measuring in at 137.54mm in height and 67.45mm in width, with the thickness of the new hardware not marked on the drawing. This leaves us wondering if iPhone 8 will take a leaf out of the new iPad’s book and come in slightly thicker than iPhone 7.
The schematic does however suggest that the diagonal measure of the iPhone 8’s display will be 5.768-inches, which is big enough to pretty much cover the entire front of the hardware, as the actual render of the device shows.

Keeping in line with previous leaks and speculation, that display dominance would allow for tiny 4mm bezels around the outer-edge of the hardware, with more than 50-percent of that bezel being taken up by the curved glass as it blends into the actual frame of the device. The Touch ID / Home button is also shown to be embedded into the display in exactly the same spot as has always been found in iPhone devices to date.

What’s particularly interesting is that if you take a look at the top of the rendered image you can immediately make out the earpiece that would be used to take telephone calls. This is also shown on the schematic drawing with a number of accompanying sensors to each side, which aren’t showing on the actual representation of the hardware.

If accurate, then it is likely that Apple has come up with a method of ensuring that these sensors are embedded below the display, and are therefore invisible to the human eye. The images do also seem to suggest that the underlying iOS operating system would have its status bar placed exactly where the ear piece is, which leads us to believe that the actual device may not be exactly as depicted.

As is generally the case when we are a few months way from a reveal, it’s worth banking on this information but also remembering to take every leak with a pinch of salt until proven to be accurate.

How We Rate Brands

To evaluate the brands, we assign each company a score on a 100-point scale. The scores are broken down into seven categories: Design, Reviews, Tech Support, Warranty, Software, Innovation, and Value and Selection. Here's what each means:

Design (15 points): We absolutely will judge a notebook by its cover — and its sides, deck, bezel and base. Though no two notebooks look exactly the same, each brand has a design language that cuts across its product lines. We look at not only aesthetics but also the materials used and overall build quality.

Reviews (30 points): The most important aspect of any brand is the quality of its products. To determine a company's Reviews category score, we used the ratings we gave its laptops between Feb. 1, 2015, and Jan. 31, 2016. We added up the number of stars each laptop received (Laptop Mag grades on a scale of 1 to 5), add a point for every Editors' Choice award and count ratings below 3 stars, which we consider "not recommended," as minus 1. We then divide the score by the number of laptops we reviewed and multiply by 5 to reach our total out of 30 points.

Tech Support (20 points): When you buy a laptop, you want to know that the manufacturer is going to stand behind it and help you with technical problems. We base this score on the ratings from our annual Tech Support Showdown, where we go undercover and pose questions to all of the companies, using their phone, Web and social channels. To reach our score out of 15 points, we divided the last Tech Support Showdown rating, which is out of 100, by 5.

Warranty (5 points): If something goes wrong with your laptop, how easy will it be to get it serviced? Most companies offer a standard one-year warranty; but some make you pay for shipping when you send in a product for repairs, whereas others absorb the cost. The best brands also allow you to upgrade your RAM and storage drive, without voiding their warranties.
