It's my birthday 🎂 and I spent it the best way I know: shipping.

My conference-review site (conference-ratings.com) got its first real user last week — and they immediately sent me a list of ideas. So this week, all of it went live:

🛡️ The community can now vouch for new conferences, so scam events (yes, that's a real thing in tech!) have nowhere to hide
🎤 Speakers can review conferences from their side of the stage
📸 Reviews can include photos as proof you were actually there

I tried to find one host to rule them all — every site I run, JS and PHP, in one place with one nice dashboard.

Turns out that product doesn't exist. So I went down the whole 2026 hosting rabbit hole (Fly, Cloudflare, Laravel Cloud, Coolify…) and came out the other side realising the thing I actually want is something I might just have to build myself.

I went hunting for one platform to host every site my agency runs — static, JS, PHP, the whole pile. Here's the 2026 hosting landscape I waded through, and why the answer turned out to be a seam, not a single roof.

Ship a JavaScript app in 2026:

1. Push to main.
2. …there is no step 2.

Free hosting, preview URLs, SSL, global CDN, a database with migrations that just run. €0, about a minute of setup. That’s the bar now.

Now try to ship a small Laravel app. Suddenly you’re assembling a PHP runtime, nginx, a queue worker, a scheduler, a deploy script — and reaching for a tool that’s either “free software, now go rent and babysit a server” or just straight-up asks for a card before anything runs. There is no push-to-deploy, fully-managed, actually free PHP host. Not one.

I love both stacks (I split my whole week between them), so this isn’t a PHP dunk. It’s an architecture mismatch JS solved years ago, and Laravel Cloud’s scale-to-zero is finally chasing the same idea. But pretending the gap isn’t there doesn’t help anyone.

I want the day a teenager with a Laravel idea and no credit card can ship to the world for free in a minute, exactly like they can with Astro, Nuxt or React today.

We’re not there yet. Not even close.

I’ve been working on a new project lately called Coral 🌊

It’s a collection of apps you can run yourself (on your own server or NAS), instead of relying on big platforms.

The goal is to make self-hosting:
✔ easier
✔ more modern
✔ more flexible
