Office Day: summer edition. ☀️🏄‍♀️

Gisteren was het weer Office Day bij Itenium: onze maandelijkse dag waarop we met de consultants samen op kantoor werken. Deze keer met zomerse temperaturen, een AI-hackathon tijdens de lunch, heerlijke desserts en vooral veel goesting om na het werk het water op te gaan.

Laptop dicht en richting kabelbaan dus. Eerst samen eten aan het water, daarna de waterski’s en wakeboards aan. En tussendoor even de eclipsbrillen bovenhalen voor de gedeeltelijke zonsverduistering. 🌒

Dat waterskiën bleek iets moeilijker dan gedacht. Er werd gevallen, opnieuw geprobeerd, nog eens gevallen en behoorlijk wat water binnengekregen. Maar vooral heel veel gelachen.

Zo mogen er nog Office Days volgen!

OnPush is now the default in Angular 22. Or how the Angular team is done suggesting the modern model and has started shipping it as the baseline.

Stable now:
→ Signal Forms: declarative & strongly typed
→ Angular Aria: accessible primitives you don't rebuild per design system
→ resource / rxResource / httpResource: async data, same reactive style as everything else

Defaults that moved with them:
• OnPush for new apps (the old strategy is now called Eager)
• Incremental hydration for SSR
• XHR upload progress is opt-in: provideHttpClient(withXhr())

"Just add an index" is where a lot of performance work starts and ends.

Simon reviewed Markus Winand's "SQL Performance Explained"; the book that explains why that instinct is right about half the time.

What it gets across:
→ Column order in a composite index is dictated by your queries, not your table
→ Functions and implicit type conversions silently disable index usage
→ OFFSET pagination degrades the further you page
→ An index that helps one query can be pure write overhead for the rest

Grounded, practical, and honest about the trade-offs. Easy to recommend.

Most RAG systems don't fail because the model is dumb. They fail because they're brittle about relationships and context: "great demo but useless when the CEO asks a real question".

Simon Verhoeven reviewed Manning's "Essential GraphRAG" (free via Neo4j) and it's refreshingly honest: what works, what doesn't, and the messy implementation details that derail most projects.

Extending Your Agent (/Harness) -- internal session

The description is the interface.

That phrase became central to our deep-dive at itenium's internal AI track: Extending Your Agent. Not the "what is Claude Code" intro, but the practitioner's guide — how to configure the harness, write your own skills, agents and hooks, and ship them as a team playbook.

Most developers know the pieces exist. Fewer know how to compose them:

✦ Turn the k***s in settings.json (context, behavior, security)
✦ Write each primitive around one principle — the description is the activation trigger
✦ Pick the right tool: repeatable workflow → skill | isolated context → agent | determinism → hook
✦ Pull from marketplaces and ship to your team

Most developers inherit their security decisions from a framework and never look underneath. That works — until the framework doesn't fit, or an AI-assisted tool hands an attacker a vulnerability you didn't know you had.

Simon reviewed Manning's Software Security for Developers, and what stood out is what it refuses to do: pretend security is "solved" by importing a library. It builds from first principles instead:

🔐 Hashing vs. encryption vs. authenticated encryption
🪪 WebAuthn & passkeys, beyond password-centric thinking
💳️ Real payment-service patterns: trust boundaries and integrity across network hops

Java code samples, but the lessons port to any stack. You close it understanding the mechanisms, not just reassured you "read about security."
