I Finally broke down and found a mini tri-pod that was reasonably priced and packed down small enough to hike with. This unit is carbon and aluminum weighs less than 1lb. Has a folded length of 10.4" It's strong enough to support my DSLR ! And it's under $100 !!!!!! Oben is the brand And B&H is where I got it from.
