7 years separate the first two photos in this album. The first was taken during a vacation trip through California in 2019. It was my first graphic pilgrimage, at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. That’s when I got the English edition of “Learning by Heart” and the poster with the 10 Rules. Little did I know that one day we would have the chance to translate and publish Corita Kent’s book in Portuguese by .

Then, in 2023, after translating two books, it was time to dream bigger: what if we could publish Corita through Clube? It became a long marathon of emails, and I relied on the persistence of people who had also been deeply moved by Corita’s words to embark on this with me (forever grateful).

So many other things came out of that decision: even the plan to do a narrative podcast like Lombada, as well as the entire communication strategy we developed for Clube in order to reach people beyond the design bubble.

What else can we dream for the next seven years? I ask this while we accomplish another dream: sending book to the printer — the first original title published by Clube.

Thank you to the team at the for allowing me to research at Corita’s archive. May many other incredible things emerge from these encounters.

In a way, this trip to Portland began years ago — more precisely on March 7, 2019. That was the day I received a copy of Graphic Means in the mail. Never tired to say this documentary had the effect of a big bang in my head: finally, someone had managed to connect technology, design history, and feminism. It showed how layouts are not simply the result of our own will, it shows how technology itself has shaped those decisions. This became a turning point for me in understanding how I design. So many other things unfolded from that moment, eventually leading to the interview book with that we published through , as well as her visit to São Paulo for .

Last night was especially meaningful because it was the first presentation about a project to which I dedicated an enormous amount of energy: Alphabettes Soup, edited by and published by .books. I could never have imagined that one day I would be working on a book with this kind of reach, this network of people, and this level of importance within the fields of design and typography.

I’m happy to share this story here in Portland. I truly have no words to thank everyone for all the warmth and care I’ve received here. It has been incredibly special. Thanks .designlibrary for the invitation 💜❤️‍🔥✨

Some of the graphics we developed for the new Melissa Delirium collection. We created illustrations and graphic proposals exploring the swan as a central figure, unfolding into psychedelic patterns that help build the collection’s dreamlike atmosphere for its launch at the Galeria Melissa in São Paulo.

The other day, someone asked me, while looking at the bookshelf in my studio, which ones were my favorites. In all honesty, I didn’t know how to answer. After a while, you start to love the whole set. It’s like a chain, you can’t simply pick a “favorite link”; they all hold the chain together. But every bracelet also holds a few charms. So let’s say this book here is one of the charms on that bracelet. 💖

A few years ago, I would never have imagined myself designing a book about typography. Mainly because I used to be very insecure—and even a bit doubtful—that I would ever have that skill. That probably explains (a topic for another post) why my early work relied much more on collage or textures as it was almost a strategy to compensate for my lack of type skills.

Looking back now, I think it was precisely this mix that gave rise to all this madness. The other day, an editor I’ve been working with for a few years told me that he likes my work because it has a certain “craziness” to it. I have to agree, it took me a lot of time (and anger) to just play and be crazy. What I may never have admitted is that this craziness often comes from the despair of blank page.

I still have much more to say about this book (and not only about typography, or the fact that it’s a 400-page book that uses 116 typeface families throughout the interior and 81 typefaces on the cover, all separated into different layers). The book hasn’t arrived on my bookshelf yet. For now, let’s enjoy the photo taken by .books.

Começou a 15ª DW!
