Every year, thousands of young people across Botswana open their examination results with hopes that their grades will unlock opportunities for higher education and their dream careers. While some celebrate university acceptance letters, others face the disappointment of not meeting the requirements for their preferred programmes.
For many, it is a moment that feels like a closed door. But for Botswana innovator Kedumetse Liphi, what appeared to be a setback became the foundation of a journey that would eventually place him on the global stage.
Liphi, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ked-Liphi Global, is today recognised as one of Botswanaโs emerging innovation leaders, with his work receiving international recognition from institutions including the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). His companyโs innovations have been selected for the HundrED Global Collection, showcased at COP28, and highlighted for their contribution towards improving lives through technology and sustainable solutions.
However, his journey did not begin with global recognition. It began with disappointment.After completing his secondary education at St Josephโs College in 2009, Liphi aspired to become an engineer. Like many young Batswana, he envisioned a direct path from school into university and towards his chosen profession. However, his examination results did not meet the requirements needed to enrol in his desired engineering programme.
Instead of abandoning his ambitions, Liphi chose a different route.
He joined the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), where he served for ten years. While the military became his immediate career path, Liphi saw the opportunity as a period to develop discipline, gain life experience, save towards his goals and continue working towards his educational aspirations.
During his time in the BDF, he pursued university studies part-time, balancing the demands of military service with academic commitments.
The experience, he says, became a defining chapter that shaped his resilience, leadership skills and determination qualities that would later influence his entrepreneurial journey.
In 2016, Liphi founded Ked-Liphi Global with a vision rooted in solving African challenges through African innovation.The company has since developed solutions focused on areas such as education, renewable energy and climate resilience. One of its most notable innovations is the Chedza Solar Backpack, a solar-powered school bag designed to provide children in communities with limited electricity access with a safer way to study after dark.
The innovation has positioned Ked-Liphi Global as an example of how locally developed solutions can address global challenges while placing Botswanaโs creativity on the international innovation map.
Today, the company collaborates with various stakeholders, including government institutions, development organisations and global partners, advancing a vision that innovation from Botswana can compete and create impact beyond national borders.
Reflecting on his journey, Liphiโs story challenges the belief that academic setbacks define a personโs future. At a time when many young people are receiving examination results and university decisions that may not align with their expectations, his experience serves as a reminder that success does not always follow a straight path.
His journey demonstrates that failure can become a turning point when met with resilience, determination and a willingness to adapt.
From missing out on an engineering opportunity to leading an internationally recognised innovation company, Kedumetse Liphiโs story is a testament to perseverance and proof that sometimes the longest route can lead to the greatest destination.
