Closing out this year's Technology Horror Stories and Cybersecurity Awareness Month with the mistakes we still see every single week. Not hypothetical, not exaggerated. Just avoidable.

Save this one. Better yet, forward it to whoever handles IT at your company.

It's that time of year. Technology Horror Stories is back. Two situations below, composited from real cases we've walked into over the years. Details changed, but the mistakes are exactly what we saw.

Save this. One of these might sound familiar.

The patch for one of the most serious PHP flaws in years came out on October 21.

However, according to Amazon’s Threat Intelligence team, the first exploit attempt was spotted on October 17.

That four-day gap is the whole story.

PHP2Shell is a pair of critical vulnerabilities in PHP itself, not in a plugin, not in a theme. That matters because PHP powers close to 70% of the websites whose back-end technology can be identified. It runs inside countless business applications: client portals, CRMs, ERPs, payment platforms and admin panels. Any website, web application or platform that uses PHP in any of its components can be taken over remotely, without a password, if it’s running a vulnerable version.
Updating your plugins won’t fix it. The PHP version on your server has to be updated.

If you’re on anything older than PHP 8.2, no patch is coming. Those versions are end-of-life.

Patching isn’t the finish line. If your systems were exposed after October 17, someone needs to check whether anyone got in.

And this isn’t only about PHP. Attackers are now using AI to read patches, build exploits and scan the internet at a pace that didn’t exist two years ago. The window between “vulnerability announced” and “vulnerability exploited” keeps shrinking.
Our team has already addressed this across our clients’ environments. But the threat is active, and every organization running web applications should be asking its IT provider one simple question this week: “Are we patched, and have we checked for signs of compromise?”

Save this and forward it to whoever manages your web platforms.

Someone left your company last month. Are their accounts still active?

Most security gaps aren't caused by sophisticated attacks. They're caused by processes that didn't happen. An offboarding that got skipped. An account that stayed open. Access that was never revoked because things moved fast and nobody had time.

Ten minutes of IT work at the right moment can prevent weeks of damage control.

Does your business have this documented? 💬
