Light switches and electrical outlets that are not working can be a very annoying situation. But this should be taken seriously. Just like all electrical equipment, if a switch or outlet is not functioning correctly it could lead to damage to your home or a safety risk to anyone interacting with the device if not addressed.

Usually, devices not working in this manner indicate a small issue, such as the device being damaged or loose wiring.

It is best to hire a qualified electrician to determine if it is a wiring issue or the device itself that is at fault.

Burning odors or sparks coming from any electrical device is a major sign of electrical issue, whether it be from an outlet, switch, or appliance. Turn the power off at the electrical panel immediately.

This can be caused by a faulty device, but it could stem from a wiring or overload problem. A qualified electrician should be contacted for the appropriate repairs.

A burning smell and/or discolouration is a serious issue. It indicates the start of an electrical fire. Other signs to be mindful of include receptacles or connected cords that are warm to the touch. Do not use the receptacle or device until repaired.

Sparks are a bit trickier, because a small occasional spark when you first plug in an appliance can be usual. If the sparks are large or have a high frequency, it could indicate an issue with your electrical system. Another sign to be weary of is a popping sound, which indicates a loose wire.

Fixing these issues can be a problem because they might not be readily apparent until damage is already done. Consult a qualified electrician to ensure your safety and the safety of your home if you are experiencing any of these issues.

Do one or more of your lights flicker?

Flickering Lights could be a sign of something simple, like a defective or loose bulb. If replacing the bulb does not solve the issue, this could be a sign of a faulty light fixture or an electrical wiring issue.

A licensed Electrician can determine the source of the problem and prevent damage to your home. They bring the expertise to diagnose the issue, whether it be the fixture itself, loose wiring connections to the fixture, or the wiring to/in the panel.

These types of problems require a professional to fully repair and ensure the root cause is found to prevent damage to your electrical system and home.

What to look for to avoid Electrical Shocks at home!

Beyond the normal safety tips, such as not sticking metal objects into electrical outlets (such as a fork or knife) and working on electrical equipment while it is on, we have a number tips below that are often overlooked. Check them out!

Have you ever felt a mild shock or tingle when interacting with an appliance, electrical outlet, fixture, or switch? If yes, this could indicate an electrical problem, such as a ground fault in the appliance or an issue with the electrical system.

Be aware that crossing a carpeted surface could produce a shock due to static, especially in dry weather and in the winter months.

However, if the shock is painful, happened at an unusual time (such as warm humid weather) and/or there are other signs of concern (unusual burning smells, discolouration, appliances not operating as it should, etc.) consult an electrician.

A simple check you can conduct to determine if you are having an electrical problem, is feeling the heat from your ceiling fixture. This is a great and simple practice that could prevent a damage to your electrical system or worse a fire.

Simply, place the backside of your hand near the fixture or bulb. If it seems too hot to touch, follow these simple steps:

Ensure the bulb is the correct wattage

Examine the fixture of obvious signs of damage or ware, such as discoloration and burning smells

Replace the bulb and see if this corrects the issue

Replace the bulb with Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) or Light-emitting Diode (LED) bulbs as these produce less heat than incandescent

Consult an Electrician if suspect a damaged or faulty fixture.

What is a Circuit Breaker?

Circuit prevent electrical wires from overheating (and potentially starting a fire) by shutting off the electrical supply to a circuit. This is known as a trip.

What are the signs of a Breaker Malfunctioning?

Breakers are a reliable piece of electrical equipment that are instrumental to the safety of your home. They wear over time and the most common sign of a faulty breaker is frequent tripping, especially on lower than normal loads (how many appliances you have plugged into the circuit).

What should I do?

If you are concerned about breaker, consult an electrician immediately. The expertise of electrician can give you the knowledge to prevent costly repairs to your electrical systems within your home. Remember, never attempt to replace a breaker on your own. Even if you shut off the breaker, electrical power is still entering the breaker panel and could induce an electrical shock.
