MB Foster

MB Foster MB Foster develops data access and delivery products for organizations around the world, and delivers them with expert knowledge and experience.

For the past 40+ years we have been evolving our data access and delivery practice. We developed ODBC access and JDBC access for various databases - these days UDACentral can connect to more than 25 data sources including Oracle, SQL*Server, DB2, Sybase, Cache, Ingres, MySQL, Postgres, and several isam file types to explore, export, import and even synch data between different OS platforms (don't

worry we take care of the Endian issues). We have services to assist in decommissioning applications, starting with exporting the data to the new application and following through to preserve the data in a fashion that will allow queries to be satisfied for compliance and regulations. Beyond “just” data our team has been developing solutions to simplify migration of mission critical application code. Our process is tried and true for delivering a painless and accurate transition between platforms.

HP3000 Migrations
On November 14, 2001, HP announced the future end of sales date for the HP3000 software and hardware product lines. Here is what you need to know about your HP3000 and what it means for your organization.

So it is 20 years later and I am amazed that I am writing this knowing that there are still many customers relying on the HP3000 as a production platform. This shows that the HP3000 is still a workhorse, but have the organizations using it fully assessed the risks involved in continuing to have mission critical applications on the HP3000?

Evaluating the risks - Your organization’s highest risk is the people!

The risk of having hardware that is not available from the original vendor is real. First there can be no hardware improvements, and second the operating system will not get updated to include new integrations and techniques. New scripting languages like python, and security like SFTP or SHA256 are not on the HP3000.
Over the past 20 years all HP3000 support moved to third parties. Hardware and operating system support organizations have dwindled and there are only a handful of qualified individuals/organizations who really know the HP3000. You ought to be asking what the retirement plans are for the key personnel at your support organizations.
While hardware and even operating system support may have been contracted out the real issues will revolve around the applications. If your organization has a package, for the most part support from the software vendor has been over for a while. If you own your source code the odds are your programmers, architects and DBAs are thinking of retiring. Even the operators for HP3000 who can write a new daily, weekly or monthly script are likely hard to find.

Planning for 2022

We think your 2022 IT plans should include understanding how to transition applications that are on the HP3000. You can follow what we like to call the 3 Rs - Either you should be re-platforming the application, replacing the application or retiring the application.
If you are interested in a conversation about planning for the migration, we have helped move over 300 databases and applications since 2002.
