🎃 Some scares last longer than Halloween.

On October 21, CBC News revealed that more than 1.5 million Canadian Crime Stoppers tips spanning 25 years had been exposed in a data breach. The data was stolen in March, but CBC’s investigation brought the extent of the Canadian exposure to light this month.

More than 850,000 tips contained personal information—including details about tipsters, people named in allegations, staff, and police. Exposed information included addresses, phone numbers, emails, and some banking details.

CBC’s follow-up reported 11 Crime Stoppers programs pausing tip intake and 24 police units suspending partnerships.

SPOILED MILK & WARM B**R?! 🍺🥛

Imagine opening your fridge to find spoiled milk and warm b**r. All because someone decided to hack the systems keeping everything cold.

On October 9th, 2026, Hackers forced the temperatures of fridges and freezers to 50 °C overnight, causing fires and spoiling food at several hundred French stores.

Marta Rybczyńska, a cybersecurity specialist and researcher, said she had found previous security warnings about old supermarket freezers running out-of-date software and newer models not having firmware updated.

“Some of these freezers hadn’t been supported by the manufacturers for several years and there were notices saying they should be replaced. Other freezers were newer but the software hadn’t been updated,” Rybczyńska said.

“The hackers found these weaknesses and used them.”

She added: “Many of the freezers appear to have been running with a default password. The hackers were able to modify or turn off the alerts, so the shops only realized when the first person arrived in the morning and saw the damage that had been done.”

Cyberattacks don't just affect computers. They can disrupt the everyday things we take for granted.

🤖 When AI goes rogue: Can artificial intelligence become a hacker?

To kick off Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we’re looking back at some of Canada's most memorable cybersecurity incidents.

In October 2026, researchers revealed that an AI agent had attempted to hack the Library and Archives Canada website.

According to a report from U.S.-based research group Transluce, AI agents made 899 search requests targeting historical Canadian records in May and June 2026. Of those requests, 13 contained suspicious instructions designed to probe the website for security vulnerabilities.

Fortunately, the attempts were unsuccessful, and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security reported no indication that government systems had been compromised.

🤖 The takeaway: Artificial intelligence is changing the cybersecurity landscape. AI can be an incredible tool for businesses, but as AI becomes more autonomous, it can also introduce new risks.
