Hey everyone, just a heads up on a new scam out there.

I got a call from "BC Hydro" stating that the power was going to be shut off in the next hour because the deposit on the Smart Meter wasn't paid. It appeared to come from the BC Hydro phone number, but then they wanted you to call a different number to investigate/pay for the "issue". The number they gave me was 1-844-371-9046. There were 2 options; Press 1 to report a power outage and 2 to make a payment. They said that notices had been sent to the service address and they knew the address. They were asking for over $900 for the "deposit". I hung up on them at that point and called the BC Hydro number directly to talk with the Billing department.

BC Hydro does not require a deposit on meters and the 844 number was not associated with them. DO NOT PAY THEM over the phone. Call BC Hydro @ 1-800-224-9376 and report the attempt and of course if you're concerned that your power will be disconnected they will tell you what's happening with your account.

Stay vigilant out there, they almost had me, they just got greedy. If it had been a smaller amount then maybe I would have just paid them... Although I would have wanted to do a bill payment via my internet banking so that would have screwed them in the end. 😁😜
