Haldimand Norfolk MP Leslyn Lewis is currently in the midst of a lawsuit against York University and Sean Rehaag, Director of the Centre of Refugee Law Laboratory at Osgoode Hall Law School.

In her suit, Lewis claims that Rehaag defamed her in a series of emails and at a public forum in 2021 while she was applying for a professorship position offered to qualified individuals of African descent.

Rehaag claims that he was concerned about what he called publicly held positions taken by Lewis on social issues such as LGBTQ+ rights and immigration and wanted to be sure consultation with “students from equity seeking groups whose interests may be impacted by the public positions taken by the plaintiff” took place ahead of the hiring decision.

Belleville Police Const. Jeff Smith is being hailed as a hero for his role in defending a synagogue in Belleville from an approaching shooter on September 20. The community of Caledonia, where Smith grew up and played for the Corvairs (seen above wearing number 5 in his 1995-96 team photo), has rallied around Smith as he faces a long road to recovery.

To mark this year's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, The Haldimand Press shares the story of Josie Penny — a Labrador Métis woman whose childhood experiences were marked by isolation, separation and trauma.

Penny originally began writing her story so her four children would understand the Labrador childhood they could never know themselves.

Decades later, those memories have reached much further. Her books are now being used in schools, helping a new generation learn about a way of life and a history Penny once feared her own family would never understand.

“I just told my story as I saw it, as I remembered it,” Penny told The Haldimand Press.
