📱 iPhone Duo Screen Failures: What Did iFixit Discover?

Apple’s first foldable iPhone has only been on the market for a few days, but some early adopters are already reporting unexpected inner-display damage.

Several reports describe similar symptoms:
• Unusual resistance when unfolding the device
• Clicking or popping sounds near the hinge
• Cracks or bright lines appearing along the folding display

🔍 What did iFixit find?

In its October 25 teardown, iFixit identified a possible mechanical explanation involving the iPhone Duo’s central hinge support.

The theory is that if an internal support component doesn’t retract as intended during folding, it could create concentrated pressure beneath the flexible OLED display, potentially causing damage.

Importantly, this remains a hypothesis—not a confirmed root cause.

🍎 Apple has responded.

On October 26, Apple acknowledged that a small number of iPhone Duo units are experiencing inner-display problems and advised affected customers to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

🔧 Our perspective at 3C-Easy Markham

Foldable displays introduce mechanical challenges that traditional smartphones don’t face. Internal screen damage can sometimes occur without obvious external impact, but determining the cause requires proper examination.

Interestingly, iFixit awarded the Duo a provisional repairability score of 5/10—the highest it has given a foldable phone. However, the inner display remains difficult and expensive to replace.

💡 Our recommendation: If your iPhone Duo develops unusual hinge resistance, noises, or unexpected display damage, avoid forcing it open or closed. Contact Apple first, especially while the device remains under its original warranty.

We believe responsible repair advice means helping customers choose the most appropriate solution—even when that means recommending manufacturer service instead of a third-party repair.

Sometimes, the Best Repair Advice Is NOT to Repair.

A customer recently brought in an iPhone 15 Pro Max damaged by swimming pool water.

Our $30 diagnostic revealed:

🔹 Failed battery
🔹 Unresponsive touchscreen
🔹 Wired charging failure
🔹 Possible passcode or account access issues

Because liquid damage can cause hidden corrosion and future problems, we explained the repair costs and risks. The customer decided not to proceed.

Was the $30 diagnosis a waste? We don’t think so.

A diagnostic helps customers understand their device’s condition and make an informed decision before spending more money.

Sometimes, the best repair advice is knowing when not to repair.

A phone that still turns on does not necessarily mean the battery is fine.

Lithium-ion batteries are generally very safe under normal use, but the risk changes when a device has been dropped, bent, exposed to liquid, overheated, or physically damaged.

From a repair perspective, these are the situations we take more seriously:

🔋 After a hard drop
If the phone is bent, the screen is lifting, or the back cover is separating, avoid continuing to charge it until it has been checked.

💧 After liquid exposure
A phone may dry out and start working again, but that does not always mean there is no internal damage. Unusual heat, rapid battery drain, charging problems, or random restarts should not be ignored.

🎈 A lifting screen may be a swollen battery
Sometimes what looks like loose adhesive is actually a battery expanding underneath the screen. Do not press the screen back down or continue using the device normally.

🔥 Unexplained overheating matters
Phones can get warm during gaming, navigation, or fast charging. But excessive heat without an obvious reason—especially together with battery drain, charging issues, swelling, or deformation—deserves attention.

There is no reason to be afraid of every lithium-ion battery. Millions are used safely every day.

The bigger concern is continuing to treat a damaged battery like a normal one.

If your phone has been severely dropped, exposed to liquid, started swelling, or is overheating unexpectedly, having it inspected is safer than simply hoping it will keep working.

“It still works” is not always the same as “nothing is wrong.”

The iPhone 18 Pro series now supports AVS charging, and that raises an obvious question:

What exactly is AVS, and how is it different from PPS?

AVS stands for Adjustable Voltage Supply.

Traditional USB Power Delivery usually works with fixed voltage levels such as 5V, 9V, 15V, or 20V.

AVS allows the charger to adjust voltage more dynamically within a supported range, so the power supply can better match what the device needs at that moment.

In simple terms:

The charger can deliver power more intelligently instead of relying only on fixed voltage steps.

That can help improve charging efficiency and reduce unnecessary power conversion and heat.

So how is AVS different from PPS?

PPS, or Programmable Power Supply, is also part of the USB Power Delivery ecosystem.

PPS actually offers finer voltage adjustment and more detailed current control, which makes it very well suited for battery charging.

So it would be inaccurate to say:

“AVS is simply better than PPS.”

A better way to think about it is:

PPS = finer charging control

AVS = broader and more flexible USB-C power delivery

They are related technologies, but they are designed with different strengths.

For iPhone 18 Pro users, the bigger takeaway is this:

When choosing a charger, wattage alone is no longer enough.

A 65W or even 100W charger does not automatically mean your phone can use its maximum charging capability.

You also need to look at the supported charging protocols.

When shopping for a modern USB-C charger, pay attention to:

USB PD
PPS
AVS

Wattage tells you how much power a charger can provide.

The protocol determines how well your device can actually use it.

Charged overnight, dead by morning — iPhone 15 Pro Max repair case

A customer brought in an iPhone 15 Pro Max that had been charging normally overnight. By the next morning, the phone would no longer turn on at all.

After connecting the device to our diagnostic equipment, we found a clear short circuit on the mainboard.

We then separated the board for further inspection and used a thermal imaging camera to locate the source of the fault. Most of the board remained at a normal temperature, but one area showed a very concentrated hotspot.

Further testing confirmed that the issue was coming from a charging management chip. As soon as power was applied, the chip heated up abnormally, indicating an internal failure that was causing the short circuit.

After replacing the faulty chip and testing the device again:

✅ Mainboard short circuit cleared
✅ Phone powered on normally
✅ Charging function restored
✅ Customer’s original data was preserved

This is a good reminder that “won’t turn on” is only a symptom, not a diagnosis.

A dead phone can be caused by the battery, charging port, power circuitry, display, or a failed component on the mainboard. Proper diagnosis is what determines the correct repair.

It is also worth paying attention to the charger you use every day.

Using a high-quality, properly certified charger and cable is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of charging-related electrical problems. Poor-quality chargers may have less stable output or weaker protection against abnormal voltage and current conditions.

For something that may stay connected to your phone for hours every day, especially overnight, a reliable charger is not the place to save a few dollars.

What Does BBB Accreditation Actually Mean?

When people see BBB Accredited Business, they sometimes assume it is a government certification or a guarantee that a business will never have problems.

It’s neither.

BBB stands for the Better Business Bureau. BBB Accreditation is a voluntary program built around standards that accredited businesses are expected to follow on an ongoing basis.

According to BBB, accredited businesses are expected to meet eight Standards for Trust:

Build Trust, Advertise Honestly, Tell the Truth, Be Transparent, Honor Promises, Be Responsive, Safeguard Privacy, and Embody Integrity.

In practical terms, BBB looks at questions such as:

Are prices and important terms explained clearly?
Is advertising honest and not misleading?
Are warranties and promises honoured?
If a customer raises a concern, is the business willing to respond and work toward a resolution?

It’s also important to be clear about what BBB Accreditation does not mean.

It is not a government certification, and it is not a guarantee of perfect service. Accredited businesses must continue meeting BBB requirements and pay accreditation fees.

To us, the real value of BBB Accreditation is not simply having another logo on the wall.

It means choosing to operate under a public set of standards focused on trust, transparency, accountability and integrity.

For consumers, it should never replace your own judgment — but it can be one more useful sign when deciding which businesses to trust.

Waterproof Doesn’t Mean Waterproof Forever 💧📱

Over the past week, we’ve seen several water-damaged phones come in — including iPhones, Samsung phones, and Google Pixels.

Some had only light moisture inside. Others already showed corrosion around connectors, cameras, flex cables, and even the motherboard.

A common reaction is:

“But isn’t my phone waterproof?”

Phones with IP67 or IP68 ratings are tested under controlled laboratory conditions when they are new. In real life, water resistance can weaken over time.

Screen and back-cover adhesive can age, while drops, cracked glass, frame damage, temperature changes, and previous repairs can all affect the seal.

Even after a proper repair and resealing, we would never guarantee that a phone has returned to its original factory water-resistance rating.

So at the beach, pool, lake, or water park, it is safer to treat your phone as water-resistant against accidents — not as an underwater device.

A few reminders:

• Don’t intentionally submerge your phone for photos.
• Seawater and pool water can be especially damaging.
• Keep cracked, bent, or previously damaged phones away from water.
• Test waterproof pouches before use.
• If water gets inside, avoid charging or repeatedly powering the phone on.
• Rice cannot stop internal corrosion.

Most importantly, water damage may not show up immediately.

A phone can work normally at first, then develop charging issues, camera fogging, random restarts, touch problems, or complete failure days later.

Water resistance is there to help with accidents, not to make a phone safe for swimming.

You go in. Let your phone stay on shore. 😅

Why do OLED screens turn red over time?

This photo shows a real comparison between two iPhone 13 screens:

Left: original screen used for about 4 years
Right: newly replaced screen

You can clearly see that the older screen has developed an overall reddish tint, and some fixed interface elements have also left behind faint “ghost” images.

This is a fairly typical aging issue with OLED displays.

Unlike LCDs, OLED screens have pixels that light up individually. Over time, the red, green, and blue sub-pixels gradually wear down, and they do not age at exactly the same rate.

As a result, an older OLED screen may develop:

* A red, yellow, or green tint
* Reduced brightness
* Uneven display quality
* Image retention / burn-in

Why does ghosting happen?

If certain areas of the screen display the same content for long periods — such as:

* the status bar
* the keypad
* navigation apps
* fixed game buttons

those pixels are used more often and wear out faster.

Over time, even when the screen switches to a white or gray background, the old image may still remain faintly visible. This is what people usually call burn-in or ghosting.

True OLED burn-in is a form of hardware aging, so it usually cannot be fixed by restoring the phone or reinstalling software.

How can you slow it down?

1. Avoid keeping the screen at maximum brightness all the time
2. Turn on auto-brightness
3. Avoid leaving static images on screen for too long
4. Use a shorter auto-lock time
5. Use Dark Mode when possible
6. Avoid prolonged use in high-temperature environments

OLED is a component that naturally ages over time.

If a screen shows some mild color shift or ghosting after years of use, that does not necessarily mean there is a quality issue. But if severe burn-in, obvious discoloration, or brightness loss appears in a short time, then the screen quality or usage environment may be worth checking.
