What Is “Shadow AI”, and Why Canadian Leaders Should Care
Many Canadian organizations believe they’re “not really using AI yet.
In reality, most already are , they just don’t realize it.
Shadow AI refers to employees using artificial intelligence tools without the knowledge, approval, or oversight of IT or leadership. This commonly includes public AI tools, embedded AI features, or free browser-based services that were never formally reviewed or governed. , [ibm.com]
Examples show up every day:
Employees pasting internal documents into AI tools to summarize or rewrite
Teams using free AI platforms to analyze spreadsheets or customer data
Staff relying on AI features inside software that were activated by default
None of this is typically malicious. People are trying to be efficient.
The issue is that leadership has no visibility into what data is being shared, where it’s processed, or whether it’s retained or reused. [ibm.com]
