Like everything we do, the new site was designed with our values in mind. We wanted it to feel more like Rebus — warm, joyful, and centered around connection.

As the capstone project for the inaugural 2026 cohort of the Rebus Luminary Fellowship for Education Leaders, each Fellow was invited to share a reflection with the broader community. We're publishing these reflections over the coming months, each a chance for a Fellow to shine a light on their own leadership journey. Today, we continue the series with Joan Giovannini.

For years, Joan had accepted unhealthy busy-ness as the cost of leadership in higher education, and her Oura Ring (a wearable sleep, activity, and recovery tracker) had the data to show how much her work weeks wore her down. During the Luminary Fellowship, the numbers shifted: her heart rate moved from its usual "Stressed" to "Restored" during the virtual sessions, and her demanding days in Vancouver still scored high across activity, sleep, and readiness. It was a "busy" that sustained rather than depleted her, and her reflection offers a measurable look at what changes when work is built around presence instead of constant responsiveness.

We're honoured to share that the Rebus Luminary Fellowship for Education Leaders has been nominated for a 2026 Open Education Award for Excellence, under the Open Practices Awards category for Leadership Development! 🌱

Education depends on leaders who nurture relationships, foster collaboration, and navigate change — those who hold others up while rarely being held themselves. Designed in partnership with the Leadership Learning Community around the question “Who leads the leaders?”, the Fellowship brought together our inaugural cohort of 15 education leaders from across Canada and the US to slow down, connect, and reimagine what leadership can look like.

Mark your calendars: the shortlist of finalists will be announced online on August 17, and winners will be announced in a live webcast on September 2.

What started in 2016 as an open-source software project has grown into a global community of educators, learners, and changemakers: 600+ program graduates and 100+ openly licensed projects, reaching classrooms across 45+ states, provinces, territories, and beyond. As the capstone project for the inaugural 2026 cohort of the Rebus Luminary Fellowship for Education Leaders, each Fellow was invited to share a reflection with the broader community. We're publishing these reflections over the coming months, each a chance for a Fellow to shine a light on their own leadership journey. Today, we continue the series with Bryce Smedley.

Bryce came to the Luminary Fellowship during a season of upheaval. He had spent years in international education, and in early 2025, he watched programs and partnerships he was part of collapse almost overnight. Returning to rural teacher education in the United States, he met a quieter version of the same strain. What he found in the Luminary cohort was a rare kind of honesty and a shift in how he understood resilience: not as surviving alone, but as carrying the weight together.

As the capstone project for the inaugural 2026 cohort of the Rebus Luminary Fellowship for Education Leaders, each Fellow was invited to share a reflection with the broader community. We'll publish new reflections over the coming months, each one a chance for the Fellow to shine a light on their own leadership journey, starting with Dr. Jennifer Potter. We invite you to read along as the series unfolds.

Jennifer learned the Luminary Fellowship's most important lesson by missing its in-person gathering entirely. Sidelined by illness the day before her flight to Vancouver, she moved through grief and the fear of letting people down into an unexpected week of rest that became a reckoning with how long she'd measured her worth by her productivity and availability. Her reflection follows that realization through the lens of liberatory leadership.
