An interesting view on AI’s future… what do you think?

10/29/2026

The quality of AI content often depends on what happens before the prompt.

Ahrefs’ content team starts with the human input: who the piece is for, what it needs to say, and what evidence or experience they can bring that isn’t already everywhere else.

Then AI gets involved.

That source material might be an interview, internal data, a real experiment, customer insight, or a point of view worth defending.

The useful lesson for marketing teams: don’t use AI to replace the thinking. Use it to help turn better thinking into stronger content.

Google’s “Discussions and forums” feature is showing up often enough that marketers should be paying attention.

Ahrefs analyzed 145 million U.S. search results and found the feature in 11.7% of them. Reddit appeared in 87.8% of those U.S. results, while the worldwide figure was 83.9%.

There’s another useful signal in the data: 43.2% of these appearances came from searches containing five or more words, and 98.7% had informational intent.

For businesses, that makes community research increasingly useful.

Look at the forums, groups, and discussion sites where customers ask detailed questions about your market. Those conversations can show you what people are comparing, what they’re confused about, and where your own content may be missing useful answers.

And if you participate, contribute first. Ahrefs specifically recommends learning the community and avoiding purely promotional activity.

That’s a much better strategy than trying to manufacture mentions.

Not every AI search visibility gap deserves a new campaign, content project, or budget request.

When a competitor starts appearing in AI-generated answers, the first job is deciding whether the signal matters enough to act on.

We recommend looking at four areas:

🔵 Commercial value: Is this connected to a service, market, or customer segment that matters to the business?
🔵 Recurrence: Does the pattern continue across different questions, platforms, or review periods?
🔵 Confidence: Is there enough evidence to explain why the competitor is gaining visibility?
🔵 Ability to respond: Would closing the gap require a clearer page, stronger customer proof, new positioning, or a much larger market investment?

Some findings warrant action. Others belong on a watch list.

Competitive intelligence becomes useful when it helps the business decide where to invest, what position to strengthen, and which apparent threats can safely be monitored instead.

For years, local search strategy has focused heavily on ranking.

AI recommendations introduce another question: is there enough reliable information about your business for the system to mention you at all?

Forbes highlights research examining more than 350,000 business profiles, where only a small fraction were surfaced by AI assistants for recommendation queries. The issue is not simply relevance. AI systems also need enough confidence in the information available to use a business in their answer.

That makes verifiability a useful part of the local search conversation.

Businesses should look at how accurately their services, locations, hours, attributes, reviews, and other details are represented across the sources AI may use.

Rankings still matter. AI-assisted discovery adds another layer: giving these systems enough reliable evidence to confidently include your business when someone asks for a recommendation.

AI answers about your business can change across platforms, locations, and prompts.

That makes occasional manual checks difficult to rely on. Ahrefs outlines several ways marketing teams can automate parts of AEO monitoring, including:

🔵 Tracking brand mentions across AI platforms
🔵 Comparing visibility with named competitors
🔵 Identifying the sources AI tools cite
🔵 Flagging inaccurate or outdated company information
🔵 Monitoring changes in answers over time

The goal is to understand how AI tools represent your business and where the information they use may need attention.

How often does your team check what AI platforms say about your brand?

Website traffic reports are increasingly mixing human and automated activity.

Fortune reports that Cloudflare measured bots generating 57.5% of webpage requests in June 2026. Separate research cited in the article found that traffic from agents capable of taking actions grew 7,851% year over year.

This shift could affect:
🔵 Website analytics and traffic reporting
🔵 Conversion funnels designed for people
🔵 API access and website security
🔵 How pages are structured for machine use
🔵 How online activity is valued and monetized

Businesses may need to treat AI agents as a distinct type of website user. That calls for clearer reporting, appropriate access controls, and online systems that can support both people and machines.

Mike and Safaa have spent the past two days at SEO IRL 2026, Canada’s largest SEO conference, connecting with the search community and diving into what’s next for SEO, AEO, and AI search.

With search evolving faster than ever, staying ahead means learning from the people who are actively testing what works.

Across two packed days, the conference brought together a wide range of speakers, strategies, and perspectives on where search is headed. From emerging approaches to AI search and AEO to insights from experts like SEO IRL founder Steve Toth (SEO Notebook) and tools like Toth Bot, there was plenty to learn and explore.

Mike and Safaa are coming back with fresh ideas and practical takeaways that we can bring to our team and the work we do for our clients.

A great two days of learning, connecting, and keeping pace with where search is headed next.

Thanks to everyone who helped make SEO IRL such a valuable event!
