Quick tip....having your own laying hens in the backyard can be rewarding in many ways. However, even the smallest of flocks can run into health issues. Make sure you are prepared for common issues; parasites, respiratory illnesses, injuries. Speak with your veterinary practice about how you should be prepared.

Quick tip...If you have farm animals and do not have a relationship with a veterinary practice (VCPR) it is important to do so. Depending on the location you live this can be established via telemedicine or onsite visit. Trying to establish a VCPR in the middle of emergency may not be possible for some practices to have veterinarians available to help. Be proactive and your animals will thank you.

Did you know...an open cow costs approximately $3 a day in feed alone. Opportunity costs of not having a productive animal in your herd, and missed revenue of not sending the animal to market are additional costs. Skipping pregnancy testing is not a viable cost cutting measure to balance the books. Speak to your veterinarian on how to economically pregnancy test your herd.

Did you know...Calves can give off around two gallons (approximately 8L) of water daily as v***r. As the air temperature rises, calves have increased respiration rate to regulate their body temperature. This causes the air around the calf to have even greater humidity levels, causing dehydration and heat stress. Make sure your animals are always receive great ventilation all year round.

Quick tip... no matter how large your farm keep an inventory of the medication you have available on the farm. Check the expiry dates, track how much and when you have administered it, how it is stored and on which animals. If you are not sure what products you should have on the farm make sure to speak with your veterinarian.
