Surface Accuracy Starts with How the Toolpath Is Calculated

Many CAM systems calculate toolpaths using a triangulated mesh. Think of it like laying a fine net over the CAD model. The triangles in that net approximate the shape of the original surfaces, and the toolpath is then calculated from that approximation rather than directly from the true CAD geometry.

The finer the mesh, the closer it can represent the model—but it is still an approximation.

CAM-TOOL takes a different approach.

With Surface Calculated Toolpaths, CAM-TOOL calculates directly from the original CAD surface. Instead of laying a mesh over the model first, the toolpath is calculated as a direct offset from the true surface geometry based on the cutter being used.

This means the calculation remains tied to the actual CAD surface rather than an approximation of it.

For high-precision mold and die machining, that difference matters. Calculating directly from the original surface data helps maintain positional accuracy, improve surface quality, and produce a machined result that more closely represents the intended CAD geometry.

Switching to a machine with a lower spindle-speed limit? CAM-TOOL V22 can automatically adjust the NC output for you.

With the new Maximum Spindle Speed setting, CAM-TOOL automatically:

🚀 New in CAM-TOOL V22: Enhanced Adaptive Roughing

CAM-TOOL V22 brings an enhancement to the Thin Remainder function, giving programmers greater control when roughing challenging thin areas.

The function now supports thin remainders between islands, automatically determining an appropriate thickness to leave before the remaining material is machined using the Remaining Shape Z Step Down setting.

The result?

⚙️ More stable machining
📉 Reduced vibration
🛡️ Lower risk of tool breakage
📈 Improved roughing efficiency
