Mirror finish machining isn't achieved by tooling alone.

It requires accurate NC data, machine stability, and toolpaths designed to maximize machine performance.

In this collaboration using CAM-TOOL's 3-Axis Module, a Shibaura UVM-450D(H), and NS TOOL PCD tooling, intricate logo features were machined directly into hardened STAVAX while achieving surface roughness measured in single nanometers.

By combining surface-based calculation with component point rearrangement, machine tracking performance was improved to deliver exceptional shape accuracy and ultra-mirror finishes directly off the machine.

✔ Single-nanometer surface finish results
✔ Reduced polishing requirements
✔ Improved machining efficiency
✔ High-accuracy mirror finishing on hardened steel

A great example of what is possible when software, tooling, and machine technology work together.

🌟 Pushing the Limits of Mirror Finish Machining

Achieving a true mirror finish requires more than precision equipment—it demands precise control of every point along the toolpath.

🔧 In this collaborative project with Shibaura Machine and Union Tool, CAM-TOOL's Component Point Rearrangement technology was used to optimize point distribution along the machining path, improving machine tracking performance and maintaining stable cutting conditions throughout the process.

📊 The result:
✔ Surface finish down to Ra 5.1 nm
✔ Clean, distortion-free mirror finish
✔ Reduced polishing requirements
✔ Improved machining consistency and reproducibility

When machine capability, tooling performance, and advanced CAM technology work together, exceptional surface quality becomes achievable directly off the machine.

Innovation happens when the right partners come together.

Roembke Mfg. & Design worked alongside ENDETEC and Engel Machinery to develop a groundbreaking two-shot mold for an automated water testing cartridge system. The project helped reduce microbiological water testing times from weeks to as little as 2–18 hours.

Over a three-year development process, CAM-TOOL CAD/CAM Software played an important role in overcoming the challenges of two-shot molding and LSR overmolding, helping the team bring a highly complexsolution to production.

As Greg Roembke noted, successful outcomes come from collaboration, communication, and a shared commitment to finding the best solution.

💡 Technical Tip: Accuracy Isn't Bought—It's Built

Many shops assume that investing in a high-end CNC machine will automatically solve their machining challenges. In reality, a machine is only one part of the equation.

True machining accuracy comes from the entire manufacturing system working together:
✔ High-end CNC machine with the rigidity, speed, and accuracy required for the application
✔ Quality cutting tools designed for the material and machining strategy
✔ Precision toolholders that minimize runout and vibration
✔ Stable workholding that keeps the part securely positioned
✔ Advanced CAD/CAM software that drives the toolpaths and controls cutter engagement
✔ Probing and inspection processes that verify the part meets specification before it comes off the machine

Even the most advanced machine tool can produce inconsistent results if one part of the process is unstable.

At CAM-TOOL, we focus on more than simply generating toolpaths. Accurate surface calculations, stable cutter engagement, and predictable machining strategies help support the entire manufacturing process—leading to improved surface finish, better repeatability, and more consistent machining performance.

Because true machining accuracy doesn't come from a single component. It comes from the complete system working together.

A manufacturing partner recently reached out looking for a better surface finish on a difficult part.

The machine stayed the same.
The tooling stayed the same.
The difference came from the toolpath strategy.

By moving to CAM-TOOL’s surface-based toolpath calculations, cutter engagement became more stable throughout the cut — resulting in a noticeably smoother finish and more consistent machining conditions.

This wasn’t about changing the entire process.

It was about getting better results from the equipment already on the shop floor.

✔ Improved surface finish
✔ More stable cutting conditions
✔ Reduced polishing requirements
✔ More predictable machining performance

Sometimes the biggest improvement comes from changing the way the part is programmed.

🔍 Case Study Spotlight: X-Cell Tool & Mold

When it comes to hard milling and demanding surface finish requirements, precision at every stage of the machining process matters.

In this case study, X-Cell Tool & Mold (now part of the SyBridge family of companies) paired high-end Yasda 5-axis machining technology with CAM-TOOL’s surface-based toolpath calculations to achieve tighter tolerances, improved surface finishes, and more efficient polishing processes.

🛠️ Working with hardened materials ranging from 50–65 HRC, X-Cell needed a CAM solution capable of matching the speed, accuracy, and performance of their advanced machining equipment.

By implementing CAM-TOOL, they were able to achieve:
✔ Improved surface finish quality
✔ Reduced polishing time
✔ Tighter machining tolerances
✔ Longer cutting tool life
✔ More stable and accurate toolpaths

💡 Unlike systems that rely on polygon mesh approximations, CAM-TOOL calculates toolpaths directly from true CAD surface geometry—helping maintain smoother cutter engagement and higher machining accuracy across complex 3D surfaces.

The results:
👉 Surface finishes improved by approximately 25%
👉 Polishing times reduced by 25–30%
👉 Tool life improvements of 10–15%
👉 Tolerance improvements of 0.0001–0.0002 inch

💡 Technical Tip: Trochoidal Milling is Often Misunderstood

Many people think trochoidal milling simply means using the side flutes of an end mill to rough material, often referred to as adaptive roughing. That's not actually correct.

Trochoidal milling refers to the tool moving in a series of small circular motions while cutting. Adaptive roughing commonly uses trochoidal motion, but it's far from the only application.

In fact, trochoidal motion can be just as valuable in traditional Z-level roughing operations because it helps maintain a more constant tool engagement and cutting load.

One of the best examples is slotting.

Why?

👉 Slotting runs at 180° radial engagement, creating maximum cutting forces, heat, and tool wear.

Most programmers compensate by:
❌ Slowing down feeds and speeds
❌ Using conservative parameters throughout the entire job

The result? Longer cycle times and underutilized tooling.

Instead, use trochoidal toolpaths.

By controlling engagement, you can:
✔️ Maintain a more consistent chip load
✔️ Reduce tool stress and heat generation
✔️ Improve tool life
✔️ Run more aggressive cutting parameters with confidence

💡 The real advantage isn't just in the slot itself. By eliminating worst-case cutting conditions, you can optimize the entire machining process instead of programming around the most demanding area of the job.
