had an old client contact me this week, raving over a previous recovery back in 2009 and now they have a Broken IMAC with a 1TB hard disk that failed and Apple no longer services, they only needed Quicken Data and everything else was backup, i estimated a cost of $400-500.
Opened IMAC with suction cup, removed all LCD mounting screws and several wires at the back giving access to the SEAGATE 1TB 7200.12, a notorious disk for FIRMWARE corruption, Running very hot and crashing. Once removed, analysis revealed SMART triggered, bad sectors throughout, but the majority of errors in the first 40,000,000 sectors. Started imaging from Sector 40 million to 1.953Billion, choosing to skip the bad sector region first, by morning i had to 1.850 Billion sectors and stopped, due to heavy sector damage. I returned to the beginning of the disk and continued copying sector 0 - 40 million, recovered with 386 errors( that's like copying a 40 million page book, with 386 pages missing)
Used a recovery tool to mount the recovered mac VOLUME, and extract the USER profile totaling 650GB. Contacted the Client and relayed the good news , they asked for the date of the Quicken data, which i gladly replied and said " oh, i have that data, i no longer need the recovery, thank you and cancelled.
