I see it being shared everywhere on social media in December:

“It’s the most magical time of the year!”

It’s usually accompanied by a photo of a Christmas tree all lit up, perfectly wrapped gifts underneath.

But what about when it isn’t the most magical time of year for all of us?

I’ll forever be here, putting my hand up, for everyone who struggles to find the magic in this month.

If your life isn’t wrapped in lights and your gifts are hard to wrap and painful to share you’re not alone.

There are unmet expectations, the things we long for, the deep feelings of loneliness, the sadness for what never was, the acceptance for what is, all of these feelings that wash over us at such a tender time.

What if your tree isn’t up yet?
What if you don’t put it up at all this year?
What if everyone else is wrapping their gifts in the perfect papers, and you can’t afford to give to those you love?
What if you cry over your grandmothers scalloped potato recipe?
What if you can’t go home for Christmas this year?
What if you’re a care worker or emergency response worker and you are absolutely exhausted from the last 3 years of hell you’ve worked though?

It’s ok if it ISN’T the most magical time of the year.

It’s ok if you’re just trying to hold on and make it through.

It’s ok if you feel envious of everyone else’s perceived holiday joy.

It’s ok if you don’t put up a tree, wrap a damn thing or send the Christmas cards this year.

You’re not what you buy, or don’t buy.

You’re whole and valuable with or without your family.

You don’t need to feel festive.

It’s ok to look forward to January and a fresh start. It’s ok to be DONE with this year.

You’re not the only one feeling these feelings, and you won’t feel them in every moment. There will still be moments of joy on the other side. All of these feelings can exist at the same time.

I’m in your corner on these long dark days and I’m just trying to get by too.

I’m in the business of making and sharing holiday magic, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve in this way. It’s cathartic and complicated.

I’m sending you a little bit of extra love over the holidays ❤️

You’re not imagining it, nobody seems to want to talk right now.
Messages are brief and replies late.
Talk of catch ups on zoom are perpetually put on hold.
Group chats are no longer pinging all night long.

It’s not you.
It’s everyone.
We are spent.
We have nothing left to say.
We are tired of saying ‘I miss you’ and ‘I cant wait for this to end’.
So we mostly say nothing, put our heads down and get through each day.

You’re not imagining it.
This is a state of being like no other we have ever known because we are all going through it together but so very far apart.

Hang in there my friend.
When the mood strikes, send out all those messages and don’t feel you have to apologise for being quiet.

This is hard.

No one is judging.
