Sony PS5 power supplies. Recently we had a customer concerned about smoke coming from the back of their PS5. Ya, that's a problem! Opened it up and we had a bad capacitor leaking oil. Analog capacitors is not something we see often, they work, but they do fail.

Gaming laptop getting too hot to handle? Does it sound like a jet engine zooming off!

High-performance gaming systems generate a lot more heat than basic laptops. They also tend to have a dedicated cooling fan for both the CPU and GPU. Should either of these fans fail, or get plugged up with dirt and dust system over heating can result.

Signs of an overheating gaming laptop (or desktop) include load fan spin sounds, GPU artifacting, reduced performance and system shut downs. Worn out, or degraded thermal compounds and pads can make it worse.

Solutions include regular “blow outs” of the cooling vents, replacing defective cooling fans and repasting, or replacing thermal compound and pads. Failure to upkeep the system can lead to permanent damage.

At RescueTECH Regina we offer deep internal cleaning and thermal re-pasting to bring temperatures back under control. Often we can reduce system temperatures by 10 - 15 degrees by doing this.
We are located at 2225 14th Avenue and open 10am - 5:30pm, weekdays.

Think deleted files can always be recovered? Think again. It isn’t so easy on modern SSDs. Thanks to TRIM technology, SSDs actively erase deleted data to maintain speed and efficiency. While that’s great for performance, it means data recovery is far less likely if something goes wrong. While it may still be possible, TRIM drive recovery specialty software and the results may not be as good as older traditional data recovery methods.

This is why performing and keeping regular backups of your data is so very important. If your drive fails or files are deleted, there may be no second chance.

At RescueTECH Regina, we recommend regular backup solutions to keep your important files safe before problems happen.

What is the latest version of Mac OS? Right now Apple is out with Mac OS 26. This updated version of Mac OS was released in 2025. When is the newest one coming out? Mac OS 27 should be released in September 2026.

What does this mean for you? Apple has been phasing out support for older Intel CPU systems, going instead with Apple Silicon CPU support. From what we have read Apple OS 27 will have NO support for Intel CPUs. So if you are running an older Macbook - Mac OS 26 is likely its final update.

Overheating isn’t just annoying; it can shorten the life of your computer. Over heating issues on both laptops and desktop computer can be caused by blocked vents and dust buildup to malfunctioning cooling systems and fans.

Solutions include periodically cleaning the vent and fan ports with compressed air, and replacing the old thermal paste on the system heat sink. Keeping your computer cool will add to its life, and performance.

Our technicians at RescueTECH Regina can inspect, clean, and repair your laptop or desktop to prevent long-term damage.

Is it the end of the personal computer? Curious what you think. There are people out there that thinking owning a personal computer, be it a laptop, or anything with its own processing power will be a thing of the past. Instead you will rent processing power from billionaires like Jeff Bezos. This power would be accessed through devices, likely sold to you, or rented by the same billionaires.

With the increase in computer chip costs (due to data centres buying them up,) more and more computing power will be available for rent. All the while personal computing devices becoming less affordable to general consumers. This computing power, generated in data centres, would then be made available to people like you and us as a service. Kind of like an Amazon subscription.

Hmmmm. Not sure if we like this idea.
Will it happen? We're not so sure.

While data centres are able to process massive amounts of data, decades ago we used to have "data centres" that people would plug into "main frames" for processing power via work stations. Over time technology improved to what we have today. Personal computing devices in the palm of our hands.

Will personal computing devices become a thing of the past, or will it be the data centres that go the way of the IBM Mainframes of the 1970s?

What is TRIM on an SSD (Solid State Drive) and why should you care? 💾

TRIM is a feature that helps solid-state drives stay fast by clearing out data blocks that are no longer in use. Doing this improves performance and extends the life of your SSD but there’s a catch. Once TRIM clears deleted data, it’s often gone for good, making file recovery extremely difficult compared to older hard drives.

That’s why regular backups are critical. In the event you have drive issues, data recovery may not be able to recover your lost data. If your data matters, such as your pictures and important files, don’t rely on possible data recovery after. The best way to protect your data is to back it up in advance.
