When designing your product, it is absolutely critical to keep in mind the ease of assembly of the product. If the product is difficult to assemble for manufacturers, then it will take longer to produce and in turn increase production costs. The two target areas for ease of assembly optimisation are handing, the moving and aligning parts, and fitting, the insertion of parts. By considering handling and fitting issues early in the design process it allows for the early identification of potential production issues and thus gives you the opportunity to “design out” these issues!

The largest influence on the manufacturability and ease of assembly of a product is the total part count. Non-essential parts add cost and complexity to the both the production of the product and the product itself. The existence of non-essential parts creates more things that can go wrong and creates waste in the production system. The best way to reduce part count is by trying to "design out" the non-essential parts. This can be done by asking these three questions!

1. Does one part move with respect to mating parts?
2. Do adjacent parts have to be made of different materials?
3. If parts were combined, would manufacturing, assembly or maintenance be made more difficult or impossible?

If you answered NO to all of these questions then the part is non-essential!
