We are incredibly proud to announce a unique wildlife project at Wild Eyes Monitoring Solutions. We have recently completed the classification, labeling and sorting of over 2.86 million trail camera photos for the Western Colorado University !
These images aren't just "pictures". They are critical data points collected from diverse research sites across the rugged Colorado wilderness. By processing this massive dataset, we’ve provided the foundational evidence needed for several ongoing research programs focused on wildlife behavior, population health, and habitat use.
WCU and their field teams collected over 2,860,000 images from 72 cameras sites over a period of two years. Although the project focused primarily on bighorn sheep, we were also able to indicate the presence of many other species including mule deer. black bear, cougar, red fox, and many other.
A number of the cameras were even able to provide crucial image data on wildfires as they moved through a few of the camera sites. Although initially devastating, fire definitely has a place on the landscape, and to see it move through an area is just another way of capturing nature in action.
A huge thank you Dr Madelon van de Kerk, graduate student Cody Hinkley, and the entire team at the WCU for trusting us with this pivotal work. We look forward to seeing how these insights shape the future of Colorado’s wilderness. We also look forward to seeing the results of Cody’s efforts, which are expected to be announced later this summer.
