KNET Planned Network Maintenance and Service Disruption

KNET will be completing planned network maintenance on Thursday, August 13, as part of an ongoing upgrade to KNET’s core network infrastructure in Toronto.
The maintenance will begin at approximately 7:00 a.m. Central Time and is expected to continue throughout the day. Customers in affected communities should expect a brief interruption to internet and network services while their connection is transferred.

Communities and locations scheduled for Thursday’s maintenance include:
Constance Lake, Mattagami, Matachewan, Whitefish Lake, Little Current, Moosonee, Thessalon, Serpent River Administration, Serpent River Kenabutch Health, Temagami, Garden River, Montreal (BCN/KRG), Sioux Lookout, Sagamok HLC, Dryden, Balmertown, Thunder Bay sites, Whitedog, Saugeen, Mishkeegogamang, Sagamok School, Pic River, Wabigoon Lake and Weir, Quebec.

All other KNET served communities have been upgraded last year and should not experience interruptions.

KNET technicians will monitor and verify connectivity throughout the maintenance period.

Smoke Advisory – Air Quality Deteriorating Today

Smoke from wildfires burning southeast of Sioux Lookout has moved into our area, resulting in poor air quality today.

The Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) is reminding residents that wildfire smoke can affect everyone, but it poses a greater risk to older adults, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with existing heart or lung conditions, and those who work outdoors.

To reduce your exposure to wildfire smoke:
Limit strenuous outdoor activities while air quality is poor.
Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
If available, use a portable air cleaner with a HEPA filter.
Use the highest-rated MERV filter recommended for your home's ventilation system and set your fan to recirculate.
If you must be outdoors for extended periods, a well-fitting N95 or equivalent respirator can help reduce exposure to fine smoke particles.
If you experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, severe coughing, chest pain, or worsening of an existing health condition, seek medical attention.

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout encourages residents to follow guidance from the Northwestern Health Unit and monitor local air quality conditions throughout the day. Please check in on family members, friends, and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to the effects of wildfire smoke.

We are continuing to respond to active wildland fires across the province. With new fires confirmed over the past 24 hours, there are currently 177 active fires.

Key updates on some fires of note include:

Fort Frances 14 & 15 – were both remapped at 55,106.3 and 48,261.4 hectares. Consult the new perimeters on the interactive fire map.

Dryden 36 – Dryden 36 has now merged with Dryden 28. These fires will now be referred to as one fire and maintain fire number Dryden 36. It now measures 1762 hectares. Aerial fire suppression continued yesterday.

Red Lake 23 – currently measures 106 hectares in size and is 2 km southwest of Macdowell Lake.

Sioux Lookout 89 - combined with two other fires yesterday and now measures 7944 hectares. Aerial fire suppression was on site yesterday afternoon.

Thunder Bay 51 - measures 15 hectares and is located 6 km north of Whitefish Lake. FireRangers continue to establish hose lines.

Thunder Bay 36 - combined with three other fires yesterday, including the fire previously listed as Dryden 13. These four fires combined into one now measure 350,922.2 hectares. Operational planning is ongoing, and crews remain focused on establishing a fire perimeter.

Wawa 17 – is located northwest of Crocker Lake and measures 25 hectares. Aerial fire suppression is currently on the scene.

Wildfire Update - July 15, 2026

We recognize that the rapidly evolving wildfire situation and the heavy smoke affecting our community have caused concern for many residents.

While conditions across the region remain serious, the city of Thunder Bay is currently not at risk of requiring evacuation.

The smoke may make conditions appear alarming, but it is important to remember that smoke does not necessarily indicate an immediate threat to the area.

However, the smoke from area wildfires is significantly impacting air quality in Thunder Bay, and the current Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for the city is Very High Risk, which recommends the reduction and rescheduling of all strenuous outdoor activities.

To ensure the safety of our workforce and to help protect public health, the City is temporarily suspending all non-critical outdoor operations and programming.

This includes the temporary closure of:
• All outdoor pools, beaches, and splash pads;
• Chapples and Strathcona Golf Courses;
• All Outdoor Marina Services

Parks and play fields will remain available for use but residents should be aware that park amenities will not be staffed while these measures are in place. Wherever possible, City staff are working to relocate programs and activities indoors.

While curbside residential garbage collection will continue, there may delays in service. Collection service will be temporarily suspended to businesses and multi-residential units.

Essential City services will continue without interruption including transit, emergency services, and other critical public works operations.

These measures will be reviewed daily and will remain in effect only as long as necessary. Updates will be provided each day.

📢 Telecommunication Outages Update – July 14, 2026 (6:00 PM CST)

KNet is currently responding to multiple telecommunications outages across the region caused by severe weather and ongoing wildfire activity. Our technical teams are actively working with partners to restore services as quickly and safely as possible.

Current Service Status:

🔴 North Spirit Lake
Multiple thunderstorms have caused power issues affecting the community's telecommunications facilities. terrestial broadband, landline, and cellular services are currently offline.

🟠 Wunnumin Lake
Terrestial Broadband and landline services have been offline since July 13. Cellular service remains available through satellite backup.

🟠 Kingfisher Lake
Terrestial Broadband and landline services went offline on July 14. Cellular service remains available through satellite backup.

🔴 Mishkeegogamang
Terrestial Broadband and cellular services are currently offline. The outage has been linked to the ongoing forest fire between Savant Lake and Mishkeegogamang along Highway 599.

🔴 Cat Lake
Terrestial Broadband, landline, and cellular services are currently offline. The outage is the result of a forest fire that caused a community-wide power outage.

🟡 Slate Falls
Terrestial Broadband is offline. Power remains available, and cellular service continues to operate through satellite backup.

General Update – 6:00 PM CST

Widespread power outages affecting multiple communities have resulted in several telecommunications systems going offline. Restoration efforts are underway where conditions allow, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
