Spent the afternoon hanging out with some rad kids who are already writing music in grade 8 & 9. Logan, Bentley, and Jaxson have a definite love and excitement that transcends their relative inexperience. Already solid players, I am stoked to see where their passion brings them and happy to be a footnote in their journey. Follow Hypersonic and get ready for - demo drop in the near future!!

Chance meetup with my friend Ridge Recordings ended up with this framed poster coming home to the archive. Incredible how many names have faded into obscurity while their purveyors have evolved into some of Atlantic Canada’s most important musical cornerstones.

To celebrate Jeremy Fisher playing in again, I recorded a cover of one of his tunes. Check out the full video (Open Scene Archive Studio on YouTube - link in bio) and make sure to catch the guy himself at Makin’ Waves Presented By SCU (indoors at Centre 200 tonight).

So, uh, last night was kind of a trip eh?

From the intro of the show to the last notes of Soda, the crowd was hot. You all made it easy to keep the energy high, and showed how strong our scene can be.

gob absolutely killed it. Theo is as funny and chaotic as advertised, Tom is super chill and a really great chat, and the band makes those songs sound just like you heard them the first time. Their crew is outstanding; Will Schatz on sound is a great guy who was very generous with his time, expertise, and his stories, while Kyle Richardson and I connected on a very fundamental punk rock level. I think we would be the best of buds if we didn’t live on opposite coasts.

The Sh*thawks sure did Sh*thawk. That was about as vintage Sh*thawks as I’ve heard them in a long time. Matty was ferocious, Moose was bursting, and it was thick and ripping. For a moment, the Curse of the Elks Lodge lived on once more.

I couldn’t have done it without a pile of people who did a lot of (literal and metaphorical) heavy lifting. James Boyle for the hook up and support, Natalie from Under the underground for expertise and knowing how to complement my workflow, Fran and Amanda Costello for making the door run flawlessly, Jon Creeden, hrrsnstwrt222, and Colin for making the tough jobs look easy, Shaemus Squires for pitching in when he didn’t have to (but that’s just the guy he is), Brian, Brian Jr, Jo-anne, and Laura from The Capri for providing care and hospitality from start to finish, and the many others who did the big and little things to help this be a success.

But, most of all, you. The audience. We sold 25 tickets on Day 1 and I knew we were going to be okay. Cape Breton has a reputation for poor presale and it is part of the reason tours like these don’t come here. You guys made it happen by coming in early, coming in hot, and supporting this show. 150 of you. You were respectful, took care of each other, and made sure EVERYONE got to have a great time. That’s punk as f**k, friends. Punk. As. F**k.

Have something in the hopper. If it works out, I’m hoping to share it soon.

Love and kindness,

Joe Unite

Now that online sales are complete, here's some tips on how to have the best time at tomorrow night's show:

🔞 Bring your ID. If asked, you must be able to show ID.
📩 Know the name and email address from your order so you can check in.
💰 No one makes money from streaming. Hit the merch table and support the bands if you are able to do so.
🥩🤬 Don’t be a jerk. If your actions are impacting others’ ability to enjoy the show, we WILL tell you to leave. No creeping, no violence, no messy drunks.
🎤 Learn some of the tunes! It’ll be super fun to hear everyone screaming “Shower Puke” or “Sun Shines Down on a Beach in the Summer” or “I Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend.”
🚑 If someone falls in the pit, everyone stops and picks them up. Everyone’s here for fun, and safety = fun.
🔭 Look out for each other. If someone is being sh*tty or someone needs help, tell us. We’re a small scene, we gotta stick together.

If you didn’t get in on advance tickets, there will be some available at the door starting at 7PM. $57.75 all in (additional fee if paying by card). And give us a follow here at Open Scene Archive Studio for more shows, more history about the CB scene, and more ways to be a community builder right here at home!
