Timbres Hip-hop au Canada

Ce projet était spécial pour notre studio — parce qu’on a grandi en écoutant ces artistes. Ce sont des pionniers culturels. Des héros. Des architectes du hip-hop canadien qui ont ouvert des portes et bâti les fondations de tout ce qui a suivi. Ce travail vise à honorer leur héritage et à faire en sorte que leurs histoires demeurent une partie essentielle de l’histoire culturelle du Canada.

Sur le plan visuel, nous avons misé sur des traitements graphiques et typographiques expressifs, inspirés des années 80 — audacieux, vibrants, sans compromis. Un clin d’œil à MuchMusic/MusiquePlus, une nostalgie chargée de l’énergie brute des débuts du hip-hop.

Ces timbres commémoratifs rendent hommage à trois figures marquantes : Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee et Muzion. Chacun a contribué à définir un son résolument canadien, façonné par des rythmes et des influences venant de la Jamaïque, de Trinité-et-Tobago et d’Haïti.

Maestro Fresh Wes () a propulsé le hip-hop canadien sur le devant de la scène grâce à des succès révolutionnaires qui ont marqué l’industrie.

Michie Mee () a fusionné le rap avec le dancehall et le reggae, créant un son iconique qui a redéfini le genre.

Le groupe montréalais Muzion () () a superposé le français, l’anglais et le créole haïtien — transformant la culture à chaque couplet.

Hip-hop in Canada stamps

This was a special project for our studio—because we grew up listening to these artists. They’re cultural pioneers. Heroes. Architects of Canadian hip-hop who opened doors and built the foundation for everything that followed. This work is about honouring their legacy and making sure their stories live on as a vital part of Canada’s cultural history.

Visually, we leaned into expressive, ’80s-inspired graphic and typographic treatments—bold, vibrant, unapologetic. A nod to MuchMusic/MusiquePlus, nostalgia charged with the raw energy of early hip-hop.

These commemorative stamps celebrate three trailblazers: Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee, and Muzion. Each helped define a distinctly Canadian sound, shaped by rhythms and influences from Jamaica, Trinidad, and Haiti.

Maestro Fresh Wes () pushed Canadian hip-hop into the forefront and with groundbreaking hits that set new industry milestones.

Michie Mee () fused rap with dancehall and reggae, creating an iconic, genre-defining sound.

Montréal’s Muzion () () , layered French, English, and Haitian Creole—reshaping the culture with every verse.

In LOST IN PARIS, photographer turns her lens toward the City of Light, capturing fleeting vignettes in landscape format. She invites viewers to rediscover Paris—not as postcard perfection, but as a living, breathing tableau of quiet moments and unexpected beauty.

As we approach the design of the 70th issue of Ground Landscape Quarterly Magazine, we’re taking a moment to reflect on its origins in 2008. This image shows typotherapy’s creative director holding a prototype of the magazine, standing in front of the creative board displaying mock spreads for the concept presentation before the inaugural issue launch.

LAL is a Toronto-based electronic duo led by Rosina Kazi and Nicholas Murray. Blending influences from hip hop, punk, electronic, and experimental music, LAL’s beats and melodies are paired with lyrics of anger, sadness, and possibility.

typotherapy collaborated closely with LAL to create a collection of packaging designs and marketing materials for their sixth album release. Featured here is a limited-edition tote bag showcasing a custom repeating album title, composed using a bespoke typeface created specifically for the project.

The project included a 12-inch LP vinyl, a 7-inch single, digital album artwork, concert posters, promotional CD packaging, and merchandise materials such as tote bags and t-shirt designs. A custom typeface was also designed for the album, complementing the striking artwork by visual artist Syrus Marcus Ware.

He Hijacked My Brain: Gary Topp’s Toronto.

Summer 2023: In our first meeting with Gary Topp—legendary for booking bands before they were famous—he shared a mantra that’s guided his life, quoting Thelonious Monk: “The only cats worth anything are the cats that take chances.” True to his word, Gary reflected, “I’ve never made a huge amount of money, but I’ve lived comfortably and had a great time for 50 years.”

It felt only right to kick off the book with this quote on page 001.

typotherapy designed a dynamic, ever-transforming visual identity, and graphic language for the Magdalene Odundo: A Dialogue with Objects exhibition at the Gardiner Museum. Drawing inspiration from Odundo’s description of her pieces as “dancers” and the exhibition’s overlapping dialogues between objects, the design features six unique type arrangements, six vibrant colour palettes, and applications ranging from backlit posters and a large-scale banner at the museum’s entrance to marketing materials, brochures with floor plans, and gallery didactics. This evolving system reflects Odundo’s artistry, celebrating individuality, rhythm, and expression.
