As Black History Month comes to an end, ACTO encourages you to continue honouring and celebrating the contributions of Black Americans and Canadians daily.

Today, we honour and celebrate Dr. June Marion James who was the first Black Canadian to be admitted to the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Medicine. Upon completion of her degree, Dr. James went on to pursue her passion for pediatrics. She earned a Specialist Certificate in Pediatrics and Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. Dr. James has won numerous awards and is a leader in her fields and the community! Thank you for your contributions, Dr. James!

On this day of Black History Month, ACTO is thankful for Dr. Anna Jarvis who contributed to the transformation of Canada’s emergency medical services and first-responders. Upon her assistance in establishing paramedics in 1984, Jarvis was invited to teach the first class of paramedics. To honor Jarvis, the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Section of the Canadian Pediatric Society created a teaching award in her name.

As ACTO continues to celebrate our fellow Black Americans and Canadians, today we honor and remember Canada’s first Black surgeon, Dr. Douglas Salmon. Dr. Salmon worked at the Scarborough Centenary Hospital and was the first Black person to hold the prestigious positions of president of the medical staff and chief of general surgery.
